Manchin plans Weirton town meeting next week

WEIRTON - U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin is on tour promoting a stand for common sense in 2012, and next week he will meet with Weirton residents.

According to representatives in Washington, D.C., Manchin, D-W.Va., will be in Weirton for a townhall meeting from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Millsop Community Center. H e intends to discuss a number of topics, including the best way to create jobs, restore fiscal discipline, protect Social Security, achieve energy independence and how to rebuild America.

"We believe this is a wonderful opportunity for Sen. Manchin to hear from residents and give them the chance to voice their concerns and ideas," said Emily Bittner, Manchin's Washington press secretary. "We are hoping for a lively crowd that will engage in a lot of questions."

Mayor George Kondik said city official are looking forward to Manchin's visit . He hopes many residents will come out for the meeting as well. He said it is important to focus on the needs of the citizens and get their input, along with city leaders, to discuss future growth.

Kondik said the city has always sought support on the state and federal level for development and infrastructure. He said officials will be discuss revenue sources. He said the city had a good working relationship with Manchin when he was governor, and he hopes to continue to build on that relationship going into the future.

"Manchin's discussion is in line with what the mayor and this council is already working on," said City Manager Valerie Means. "We've been engaged with area energy companies to take advantage of the energy- saving contracts available to the city."

One thing Kondik said city officials will do is look for Manchin to be a key player to advise on Marcellus shale drilling as well as any future development of ArcelorMittal property and other prime locations in the city.
