Bernard E. Gareis ‘Buddy Sharpe’

GAREIS, Bernard E. "Buddy Sharpe", 73, of Bulger, Pa. died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, in the Washington Hospital.

He was born Dec. 14, 1937, in Atlasburg, Pa., a son of the late Earl "Beefy" and Rose Rotta Gareis.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Gareis was employed by Paris Contracting in Atlasburg.

He was a member of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Bulger.

Mr. Gareis, a.k.a. Buddy Sharpe, was the leader of the band, Buddy Sharpe and the Shakers. The band recorded "Linda Lee" in 1957 and was the opening band for several big name bands in the Tri-State Area also appearing on local TV and radio stations.

Mr. Gareis started the outdoor concerts at the Slovan Drive-In in 1958 and participated in shows with Porky Chedwick.

He was voted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 2004.

Mr. Gareis enjoyed going to car shows and owned several antique cars.

On November 19, 1977, he married Sandra Szotkowski, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Kip (Carlie) Gareis of Burgettstown, Pa., Brad Gareis of Kenner, Louisiana; granddaughter, Alexis Gareis; four brothers, Earl J. Gareis of Phoenix, Ariz., Harold Gareis of Georgetown, Pa., Elmer Gareis of Cleveland, Ohio, Larry (Judy) Gareis of Weirton, W.Va.; three sisters, June (Richard) McKitrick of Paris, Pa., Thelma Wass of Greensboro, Pa., Barbara Ann (Thomas) Spinella of Weirton, W.Va.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are brother, John Gareis; three sisters, Leona Wells, Lois and Mary Louise Gareis.

Friends will be received from 2-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 in the Taucher Funeral Home, 23 Erie Mine Road, Burgettstown. Other arrangements will be held at the convenience of the family. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
