OVAC queen has Brooke ties

WHEELING - Bria Cross, a recent graduate of Wheeling Catholic Central High School, was crowned 2011 Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Queen of Queens during the Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Charity Classic, July 23.

She is the daughter of David F. and Cheryl Cross of Wheeling and granddaughter of David B. and Terry Cross of Wellsburg.

For the talent segment of the competition, which involved participating area homecoming queens, Cross performed a jazz dance.

She has studied dance for 16 years.

A member of St. Michael's Parish, her high school activities and honors included National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Guys and Girls United to Serve, Senior Leaders, Peer Ministry, Distinguished Honor Roll, Who's Who Among American High School Students, varsity track and cheering, both for three years; and West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission cheering champion.

Cross has been accepted to the West Virginia University 21st Century Business Scholars program and named to the school's dance team.

She plans to major in accounting and minor in dance.

Brooke PSD moves meeting

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Service District board will hold its next regular meeting an hour earlier than usual.

The board's Aug. 10 meeting will be held at 3 p.m. at its office at 711 Charles St.

Free concert set in park Sunday

FOLLANSBEE - Area dance band Night Life will perform at 6 p.m. Sunday at Follansbee Park.

The concert is part of a series of free concerts and movies held in conjunction with the Follansbee Police Department's Community Watch program.

Those attending should bring blankets or chairs.

WELLSBURG - Area dance band Twice As Nice will perform at 6 p.m. Sunday at Wellsburg's Central Park at 18th and Charles streets.

The free concert is being sponsored by the Top of West Virginia Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Club to hold

fishing tourney

COLLIERS - The Colliers Sportsman's Club will hold a public fishing tournament from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Aug. 13.

The cost is $5, with a 50-50 payout to the winner.

The club is on Putney Ridge Road off Tent Church Road.

Library to hold story hours

FOLLANSBEE - The Follansbee Branch of the Brooke County Public Library will be holding story hours for children, ages 2-5, and their caregivers on Monday and Aug. 15 at noon.

Children will enjoy a story, craft, games and a snack.

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be showing the PG-rated animated film "Rango" at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Playhouse season continues

WELLSBURG - Brooke Hills Playhouse's 40th season continues with two productions this month.

The playhouse's production of the comedy "Laughing Stock" continues at 8 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Written by Charles Morey, it take a hilarious look at the backstage mishaps of one New England community theater. Directed by Diana Mendel, the production will leave patrons looking at theater in a different way.

Mendel also plays a major role in the next production, as writer and director of "bfF?," a title inspired by the text-messaging craze and featuring local youth in a story about friendship.

The show will run Aug. 11-14 and 18-20 at 8 p.m. and Aug. 21 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students and $6 for children 12 and under. Groups of 20 or more will pay $8 per group member.

WEllSBURG - A yard sale to benefit the Brooke County 4-H program will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today outside the Station Grille Restaurant at state Route 2 and 12th Street.

Workshop offers gardening tips

WELLSBURG - Norm Schwertfeger, an agent with the Brooke County West Virginia University Extension Service, will conduct a class on home composting from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 30 at Brooke Hills Park's Bald Eagle Shelter.

He will offer tips on building an inexpensive compost container and expediting the composting process.

The cost is $5. Call (304) 737-3666 to register.
