MORGANTOWN - J. W. George Wallace, publisher of The Brooke County Review, was presented the Adam R. Kelly Premier Journalist Award from the West Virginia Press Association at its annual convention.

Named for the late Adam R. Kelly, former owner and editor of the Tyler Star News, the award is the highest individual honor bestowed by the organization to individuals for service to newspapers, the press association and their communities.

Recipients are selected by a committee of past presidents.

A native of Lynchburg, Va., Wallace began his newspaper career in Danville, Va., where he was sports editor. He has spent the past 24 years as editor and publisher of The Brooke County Review.

Between those newspaper stints, Wallace worked in charitable fundraising for the United Way in Michigan. He came to West Virginia as executive director of the United Way of the Ohio Valley in Wheeling and also served as administrator of the Ohio Valley Medical Center there.

In recent years he became chairman of the board of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, a group of World War II veterans who were captured and imprisoned by the Japanese while defending the Philippine Islands.

He also is publisher of The Quan, its quarterly newsletter.

He is an elder and trustee of Wellsburg Christian Church, member of the Wellsburg Planning Commission, and vice president- weeklies, treasurer, trustee and past president of the West Virginia Press Association.

"George has always been an advocate of the press association, donating his time and money in support of our organizations" said Executive Director Gloria Flowers, who added, "I can't think of anyone more worthy of this award."
