Garibaldi Sisters meet

FOLLANSBEE - The June meeting of the Sisters of the Garibaldi was held recently with President Kathie DiCarlantonio presiding.

The charter was draped in honor of the late Viola Marcelli Cardelli and Dolly Berardelli Johnson.

Hostesses were Mary Ann Fletcher, Cindy Thomaselli and Pauline Thomaselli.

Plans for upcoming meetings were discussed with a Halloween party planned for Oct. 18.

Prize winners were JoAnn Bernabei, Filomena DiCarlantonio, Yolanda Minnella, Vicky Ross and Sylvia Wendt.

The next meeting will be held Tuesday.

Crocheting group

welcomes members

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library's Crocheting Group will meet at the library at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The group is for beginners through experts. Bring your own supplies and projects. If you need help, someone will be available to assist or instruct you. Call (304) 737-1551 to register.

Fall baseball league to hold signups

WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Baseball Association is accepting registrations for fall baseball for pinto, mustang, bronco and pony age groups.

The cost is $30 per child, and the deadline to register is Wednesday.

The season will begin in mid-August and run through early October.

Football tryouts to begin

FOLLANSBEE - Football practice for the Follansbee Middle School Blue Waves team will begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 8 at the school.

Players must be in grades 6-8 and bring completed physical forms. The forms may be obtained at the school's main office.

School supplies sought

FOLLANSBEE - Energy Express, a summer reading and nutrition program for children in grades 1-6, is collecting school supplies for local children in need.

Up to July 27, items may be dropped off at the the Brooke County Library, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and at Jefferson Primary School Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A Night at the Races set

FOLLANSBEE - The Brooke County Federation of Democratic Women will hold A Night at the Races Aug. 6 at the Garibaldi Lodge on Main Street.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and tickets are $20 each, which includes dinner, drinks, door prizes, horse and a dance following the race.

Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling Meredith Merriner at (304) 527-0477, Robin Snyder at (304) 394-5914 or Gina Marchetti at 527-2161.

children's crafts

WELLSBURG - Children are invited to stop by the Brooke County Library and its Follansbee Branch on Tuesday to create a variety of African animal crafts.

The tables will be available while materials last.

Free concert

Sunday at park

FOLLANSBEE - The city will kick off a series of free concerts and movies at Follansbee Park with a performance by the El Monics at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The group will perform classic rhythm and blues, including doowop, disco and soul, at the park's gazebo.

Attendees should bring chairs or blankets.

Library to hold story hours

FOLLANSBEE - The Follansbee Branch of the Brooke County Public Library will be holding story hours for children, ages 2-5, and their caregivers at noon Monday and July 25.

Children will enjoy a story, craft, games and a snack. Call (304) 527-0860 to register for the free programs.

WLU offers

special degree

TRIADELPHIA, W.Va. - Working people interested in completing a bachelor's degree through Saturday courses may enroll in West Liberty University's bachelor's degree in organizational leadership and administration program.

The deadline to apply for the 18-month program is Aug. 5 and classes will start Sept. 17.

The BLA program is designed for those who seek a bachelor's degree to enhance opportunities for employment or advancement.

To enter, students must have completed more than 60 semester hours plus general studies courses.

The program involves courses taught at WLU's Highlands Center and an Internet component.

It includes courses in leadership, organizational communication and negotiation, organizational ethics, marketing for leaders, finance for administrators, leadership in literature and film, human resources for administrators, and more.

Magician to appear

WELLSBURG - Dave Powers "The Magician" will perform at the Brooke County Public Library at 4 p.m. Friday.

A Clarksburg native, Powers is an illusionist, ventriloquist, escape artist, mentalist and live entertainment producer.
