Library to observe

Memorial Day

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will honor American men and women who have died in military service with fifteen minutes of solemn observance at 10:30 the Elmer Vincent Room on Monday.

Light refreshments will be served.

The library and its Follansbee Branch will be open from 9 a.m. to noon that day.

Animated film to be shown

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be showing the G-rated animated film "Gnomeo and Juliet" June 4 at 11 a.m.

Community art exhibit set

BEECH BOTTOM - A community art exhibit, with the theme "Hope" and featuring various aspects of the village, will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the basement of Beech Bottom Community Christian Church.

Both residents of Beech Bottom and natives of the former village of Power have been invited to submit entries to the all-ages art show.

The exhibit is being held through a collaboration of Beech Bottom Council, the village's Community Neighborhood Watch program, the church and the Appalachian Institute at Wheeling Jesuit University.

Refreshments will be served.

Chamber plans afterhours

WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Chamber of Commerce reported its first Comedy Night, featuring local comic Dan Mains and friends, was enjoyed by many.

Chamber leaders thanked Kim and Keith Malinky of the Station Grille for hosting the event and providing a variety of hors d'oeuvres, local newspaper publisher George Wallace for providing admission tickets and Mary Kay Wallace and the staff of the Brooke County Public Library for their assistance. There are plans fro a business after-hours on June 15 at Wilkin Flower Shop, and the chamber is looking for other members to host after-hours in the future.

After-hours are a way for local businesses to spread the word about their goods or services and network with other business owners and one benefit of being a member of the group, said Barbara Finley, the chamber's executive director.

Those interested in hosting an after-hours or joining the chamber should call Finley at (304) 479-2115.

Library to screen suspense film

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be showing the PG-13-rated suspense film "The Rite" Tuesday 1 p.m.

The film stars Anthony Hopkins in a supernatural thriller about exorcism. Call (304) 737-1551 to reserve a seat and popcorn.

Class to hold

25-year reunion

WELLSBURG - The Brooke High School Class of 1986 will hold its 25-year reunion July 1 and 2.

An icebreaker will be held at 7 p.m. July 1 at DeStefano's Restaurant in Follansbee. The reunion dinner-dance will be held the following day at Staffileno's On The River, with photos at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $30 per person and $60 per couple, and reservations are requested by June 22.

Drawing held for PGA tickets

WELLSBURG - The Greenbrier Classic is teaming with the Brooke County 4-H program to offer a chance to attend the Professional Golf Association tour at The Greenbrier Resort at White Sulphur Springs.

Officials with The Greenbrier Classic, a PGA Tour and FedExCup event to be held July 23-25, have donated badges that will allow winners access to the tournament, including practice rounds; hospitality areas with complimentary snacks, tailgate-style food, free parking and tickets to The Greenbrier Classic concert series headlined by Tim McGraw and Keith Urban.

The Brooke County WVU Extension Service will be holding a drawing at 4 p.m. June 17 at its office at 840 Charles St. for three badges. Chances are $5 each, with proceeds helping to send local children to 4-H Camp.

Bethany 4-H

club meets

BETHANY - The Buffalo Clovers 4-H Club met April 16 in the basement of Bethany Memorial Church, with President Ryan Seidewitz presiding.

It was announced 4-H Camp will be held June 27-July 1 at Oglebay Park. Plans were made for an end-of-the year picnic at 3 p.m. June 18 at Bethany Park and to plant flowers there then as a community service project.

Adviser Wendy Seidewitz noted last year dues were paid for all campers, and Brooke County 4-H leaders hope to do the same this year.

She presented pins to members who completed their projects last year, having received purple Best of Show ribbons. Zach Van Horn received a membership pin.

Joann Van Horn announced an essay contest. The essays can be on any topic and and should not be more than 1,000 characters, she said.

Van Horn also said she'd like to form a horticulture team for a competition to be held July 28 in Morgantown. At least six participants are needed.

Health Officer Arkady Seidewitz presented a program on "Powerful Words."

Austin Chambers led the Pledge of Allegiance and Wendy Seidewitz presented the treasurer's report.

Website promotes helping troops

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Joanne Jaeger Tomblin, wife of Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, has launched a new military service initiative, "Serve West Virginia Military: Serving Those Who Serve Us" in conjunction with First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden's national "Joining Forces" initiative.

The effort is designed to engage grass roots and community groups to play an active role in supporting and providing assistance to West Virginia's deployed service men and women, their spouses, children, active stateside military and veterans.

Each month, she will announce a new "mission," with suggestions for individuals or groups, on the Serve West Virginia Military website at Businesses, not-for-profits, faith-based groups, school children of all ages, and all community organizations are encouraged to participate.

Comment accepted on rate hike

CHARLESTON - Customers of American Electric Power subsidiaries Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power may comment on a proposed 9.5 percent rate increase, effective July 1.

The increase is opposed by AARP West Virginia, which has established a place on its website at, where residents may comment. Comments also may be submitted directly to the West Virginia Public Service Commission at 201 Brooks Street, PO Box 812, Charleston, WV 25323.

The commission is expected to consider approval of the increase before June 30.

Church to mark anniversary

WELLSBURG - Henderson Chapel AME at 844 Main St. will be celebrating its 113th anniversary with special services and special guests this weekend.

On Saturday at 3:30 p.m. the Rev. Phyllis Agnew and Tree of Life Baptist Church Congregation and Choir will be the guests.

And on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. the Rev. Bobby Ellsworth and Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Congregation and Choir will be the guests.

Friday's guests were the Rev. John Stevens and the Wayman AME Church Congregation and Choir.

Library to hold story hour

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will hold an evening story time for children, ages 4-9, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Children will listen to a story, create a craft and enjoy fun and games.

Brooke student receives honor

WEIRTON - Harley Denise Marsh, a senior at Brooke High School, has been named to the National Society of High School Scholars.

The daughter of Kevin and Aimee Marsh of Weirton, she is an honors student, was named to the Principal's Honor Roll all four years and has literature and photography published in the school's literary magazine.

She attended the Washington Journalism and Media Conference in Washington, D.C., was awarded a scholarship by the Upper Ohio Valley Italian Festival and plans to study journalism at Mount Union University.

Her activities include membership in the drama, math and art clubs, soccer team, Order of the Phoenix and Health Occupation Students of America; volunteering at Vista Care Center in Lisbon, Ohio, Netwick's in East Liverpool, Ohio, and as a Salvation Army bell ringer; and working at the Weirton McDonald's.

She is a member of Wintersville United Methodist Church.

Club to hold 3-D archery shoot

WELLSBURG - There will be a 3-D archery shoot at the Brooke County Sportman's Club on McAdoo Ridge Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Church to hold Strawberry Fest

COLLIERS - Olde St. John's Episcopal Church, at Eldersville and St. John's roads, will hold its annual Strawberry Festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 4 in conjunction with the St. John's Road community yard sale.

The church will be selling large strawberry shortcakes, taco in a bag and hot dogs. There also will be a white elephant sale.
