Safety baby shower to be held

The Brooke-Hancock Partners in Prevention will hold a safety baby shower for all new and expectant mothers from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 16 at the Follansbee Community House and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 at the Hancock County Senior Center. Held by a group of agencies aimed at helping families and children, the free event will include parenting tips and refreshments. Registration is required by calling (304) 737-4444.

Moose lodge to host blood drive

WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Women of the Moose will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wellsburg Moose Lodge, 844 Main St. Doughnuts will be served to morning donors and a light lunch to those give blood in the afternoon. Donors should bring photo identification. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments may be made by calling Linda Porreca at (740) 264-4268 or (304) 737-1552.

Chamber to hold Comedy Night

WELLSBURG - The Wellsburg Chamber of Commerce is hosting A comedy night featuring Wellsburg native Dan Main and friends at 7 p.m. May 19 at the Station Grille restaurant at 1200 Commerce St. (state Route 2). Tickets are $20 per person for the show, which will feature comedy of a PG-13-rated vein and follow a social hour at 6 p.m. For information, call the chamber at (304) 479-2115.

Park to hold three events

WELLSBURG - Brooke Hills Park will be offering something different for its 2011 summer season with the addition of the Brooke Hills Park Trifecta on the second Saturday of each month. The event will include a mud bog, flea market and free concert.

The first Trifecta will be held May 14, with the mud bog to begin at 1 p.m., the flea market scheduled for 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the concert featuring acoustic guitarist Mike Underwood at 8 p.m.

Admission to the mud bog is $5.

Cooking class set

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library is offering an after-school snacks cooking class for children ages 10 and up Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Children will learn to make snacks, read recipes and more with Nora Bell.

discuss book

WELLSBURG - Col. Ed Scholl will discuss his book "Lewis and Clark in the Twenty-First Century" and sign copies at the Brooke County Public Library on Monday at 1 p.m.

Two hundred years after the Lewis and Clark Expedition, another expedition set out to follow in those brave men and women's footsteps, traveling from Pittsburgh, Pa. to the Pacific Coast and back again.

Scholl shares what it was like to relive that historical event.

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be showing the PG-rated film "Gulliver's Travels," starring Jack Black on May 14 at 11 a.m.

When a shipwreck lands a lowly mailroom clerk named Gulliver on the fantastical island of Lilliput, he transforms into a giant, in size and ego.

Head Start

meeting set

WHEELING - The Board of Directors of Northern Panhandle Head Start Inc. will hold its annual corporation meeting Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Elm Grove United Methodist Church, 125 Kruger St.

Leaders will review accomplishments over the last year.

Created in 1965, Head Start focuses on the early education, health and nutritional well-being of young children and advocates for families.

Marlene Midget is executive director of the local program, which serves families with children up to 5 years old in Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel counties.
