School board moves meeting

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Board of Education has moved its next meeting to 5 p.m. Wednesday at its office at 1201 Pleasant Ave.

The board normally meets at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of each month.

Special Olympians earn medals

MORGANTOWN - Brooke County Special Olympians returned from the West Virginia Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament with several medals and ribbons.

Two basketball teams from the program were among 22 from throughout the state and more than 600 athletes who competed in the event, which was held March 25-27 in Morgantown.

A team comprised of Ronnie Miller, Drake Johnson, Clayton Weeks, Brandon Klages, Mike Staats, Eric Greathouse, and B.J. Griffin received a bronze medal.

And a team made up of Danny Adams, Heather Ambrose, Marie Kosut, Mark Pollock, Matt Elcesser, Jimmy Hunter and Andrew Rager received a fourth place ribbon.

The teams were coached by Cathy and Dr. Sara Furioli. Competing in individual skills events were Adam Cash, who earned a gold medal; Edward Kosut, who received a fourth place ribbon; Priscilla Dugan, who won a bronze medal; and Mattie Fillipelli, who received a silver medal. Their coach is Judy Ambrose.

Library board to meet April 25

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library Board will meet at 4 p.m. April 25 in the library's Elmer Vincent Meeting Room.

Ramp dinner offers unique taste

COLLIERS - A ramp dinner featuring various dishes made with the variety of onion will be served from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 1 at Olde St. John's Episcopal Church at Eldersville and St. John's roads.

The cost is $5. The menu will include potatoes, soup beans and cornbread.

Early voting set for special election

WELLSBURG - Brooke County Clerk Sylvia Benzo has announced dates for early voting for the state's special primary election to determine candidates for governor.

Individuals unable to cast ballots on May 14, the date of the election, may do so between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday from May 1-6 and between those hours on two Saturdays, April 30 and May 7.

Benzo said Monday is the last day to register.

Because there are no Mountain Party candidates on the ballot, those registered for that party must change their registration to Democrat, Republican or Independent and request either a Democratic or Republican ballot.

Reading council plans fun night

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Reading Council will hold its next Family Fun Night at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooke County Public Library.

All age groups are invited to attend. Activities will include stories, crafts, snacks and games conducted by Professor Maryann Ehle and members of the reading council.

History group offers program

COLLIERS - Members of the A.D. White Research Society of Avella, Pa. will share stories of local history and poetry at 10 a.m. April 30 at Olde St. John's Episcopal Church.

The church was built in 1849 and is surrounded by a cemetery with graves dating to the 1700s, when its original structure was built.

Road work

announced

The West Virginia Division of Highways has announced road work to be performed next week, pending suitable weather.

Crews will be relocating water and sewer lines and grading and paving Pennsylvania Avenue from California Avenue to South 22nd Street. Drivers may experience minor delays. State Route 2 between Cross Creek Road and the north end of Wellsburg has been reduced to one lane in both directions while crews install guardail along the highway's center median.
