BETHANY - Bethany College has announced its schedule of events for its 2011 Alumni Weekend, to be held April 29-May 1.
Activities will include class reunions, a student art exhibit, the Darline Nicholson Breakfast, and a special presentation on the literary arts at Bethany by Wiley Cash, assistant professor of English and author of "The Rain Barrel," a novel scheduled to be released by William Morrow/HarperCollins in 2012.
The weekend will kick off with a welcome dinner on Friday, followed by the annual Student Art Exhibit Awards Reception.
Saturday's events will include the Darline Nicholson Breakfast at which the recipient of the Aleece C. Gresham Leadership Award will be announced. The prize is given to a female senior for academic accomplishment, leadership in a variety of co-curricular activities and dedication and commitment to the college.
The Joyce Chernenko Outstanding Advisor Award will also be presented. It is given to a woman who fosters growth in the women of Bethany.
On Saturday Cash and Bethany junior Jenny Preston will discuss the college's major and minor in creative writing, the rebirth of Bethany's student literary magazine The Harbinger, and student and faculty publicati ons.
Reunion class photos will be taken Saturday, followed by the Alumni Awards Dinner and Reception. Honored guests at the dinner will include Dr. Rodney Hurl, recipient of the college's Alumnus of the Year Award; the Rev. Dennis Sparks, recipient of the Alumni Community Service Award; and Dr. W. Blair Geho and Steffanie D. Lewis, recipients of Alumni Achievement Awards.
Athletic events will include the Bethany Alumni Soccer Association's Golf Outing Friday at the Indian Run Golf Course and a memorial at Hoag Field Saturday, as well as a Star of Honor Reception that evening.
The weekend will conclude with the annual Scroll Breakfast, open to all alumni who have celebrated their 50th reunion and with special honors this year to members of the class of 1961.
