Prom dresses sought for benefit

WELLSBURG - Donations of prom dresses are sought for an event to raise funds for efforts to encourage women affected by breast cancer.

Denise Grooms of Wellsburg and Florence Fleener of Avella, who are sisters, will be selling the dresses from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. March 13 at Staffileno's on the River to raise funds for restaurant gift cards they purchase for women fighting the disease and their families and for a calendar showcasing area women who have fought breast cancer.

Dubbed Faces, Family and Friends, the calendar is in its second year and copies are still available.

Gently worn dresses from the last few years and in various sizes are needed. For information, call Grooms at (304) 737-4238 or Fleener at (412) 335-6441.

Exercise classes offered

COLLIERS - Non-aerobic exercises aimed at improving stability, balance and strength will be offered from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. each Tuesday, beginning March 8, at Olde St. John's Episcopal Church on Eldersville Road.

The class will be taught by Jan Caprarese, a certified fitness instructor, and a $2 donation is requested.

School retirees to meet

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Association of Retired School Employees will meet at 11:30 a.m. March 8 at Brooke High School's Bruin's Den.

Regional Director Connie Watson of Wetzel County will speak, and the Brooke High School Madrigal Choir will perform.

Members are asked to bring items for a local food pantry or the Brooke County Animal Shelter.

A drawing will be held for a spring basket filled with items donated by members.

All retired school employees and their spouses are invited.

3-D archery shoot set for Sunday

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Sportsman's Club will hold its first three-dimensional archery shoot Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There also will be trap shooting Sunday morning as well as Wednesday evening. The kitchen will be serving hot food and soft drinks.

Brooke grad named to dean's list

PITTSBURGH - Megan Gialluco, a senior in the A.J. Palumbo School of Business Administration and daughter of Donna Gialluco and Gregg Gialluco of Weirton, has been named to the fall 2010 dean's list at Duquesne University.

Students named to the dean's list have maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, with no grade lower than a 'C.'

New business to hold open house

WELLSBURG - Lollipops & Gumdrops Children's Consignment Store will be the site of a grand opening and ribbon cutting conducted by the Wellsburg Chamber of Commerce, Tuesday.

The grand opening of the new business at 736 Charles St. will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Church to hold soup sale

FOLLANSBEE - Follansbee United Methodist Church at 1002 Virginia Ave. will hold a home-made chili and soup sale from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.

Chili, bean, broccoli, chicken noodle, potato, vegetable, vegetable beef and wedding soup will be available for takeout only at a cost of $5 per quart. To order in advance or for information, call (304) 527-0483 or (304) 670-3191.

Evening story time to be held

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be holding an evening story time for children, ages 4 - 9, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. It will include a craft and games. Call (304) 737-1551 to register for the free program.

Seuss' birthday to be celebrated

WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Reading Council will be holding a Birthday Party for Dr. Seuss at the Brooke County Public Library at 1 p.m. March 5.

It will include stories, crafts and games presented by Professor Maryann Ehle and the Brooke County Reading Council.
