WELLSBURG - The Brooke County 4-H Lego Robotics team, dubbed the Smartbots, competed in the first LEGO League Robotics Tournament held at Wheeling Jesuit University, Dec. 11.

It was among several area teams challenged to program their LEGO robots to perform various medical-related tasks, such as repairing a broken bone and delivering a pacemaker, while steering clear of obstacles.

Teams also were required to complete a team work activity, research project presentation, and robot design presentation.

The Smartbots were sponsored by the Brooke County office of the West Virginia University Extension Service, Brooke County 4-H Leaders Association and NASA IV&V Center.

Team members and coaches participating in the event were: Alec Burkhart, Dante Johnson, Kate James, Nat Knutson, Scott Chivers and Tim Gatts.

Alicia Cassels is the program coordinator for the WVU Extension Service and Liz Gatts is program assistant.
