Marland Heights 5K Classic held

WEIRTON - Runners from near and far came out on Friday to participate in a community health and fitness event.

The Marland Heights 5K Classic, hosted by the Weirton Park Board, took place Friday evening starting near the Marland Heights Park. Several races were held giving children 12 and under a chance to race as well as adults.

Kevin Elias, program director, said it was a nice turnout, and he was happy with the results. He stated the Marland Heights 5K Classic is a community health and fitness event geared for the entire family with races certain to attract people of all ages.

STARTING LINE — Runners and walkers of all ages came out on Friday to participate in the Marland Heights 5-K Classic. Approximately 42 children and 65 adults registered for the running event. A special award ceremony and cookout for all participants were held at the Marland Heights Park following the event.

He said there were approximately 42 children signed up to participate as well as 65 adults from as far away as Morgantown, California and New York.

"The weather is nice, and the people are coming out to be a part of the event," he said.

George Kondik, Ward 5 councilman, said he was pleased to see so many residents participate in the Marland Heights 5K Classic.

He said health is important and coming together as a community for such an event is "wonderful."

Along with the 5K race along the city streets on Marland Heights, Elias stated, the event also featured a two-mile fitness walk and specialty races such as adult and child walk, pet owner and pet race and the two-mile parent and child stroller dash.

Following the race, there was a special awards ceremony and cookout for all participants and event sponsors.
