Society being dumbed down

January 24, 2010
The Herald-Star

To the editor:

I am writing to express my disdain for the influx of reality shows on TV that legitimize, romanticize and empower idiocy. These shows, namely "Jersey Shore" and the "Housewives" series, exist only because this country has become increasingly indifferent to anything that requires thought.

In these tough economic times, education and enlightenment should be considered extremely important. In contrast, it seems people only want to be entertained, mostly by acts of brainless apathy. This is why these shows should be considered dangerous. They convey the message that being ignorant is OK as long as it is humorous and profitable. And people are buying into it.

It is sickening to think there are people making money solely because their ineptitudes appeal to the masses. Rewarding those who laud their own nitwittedness is not a trend our society should embrace. If you agree with me, boycott these shows and tell everyone who will listen to halt the dumbing down of America by not watching reality shows that exude ignorance. These shows only exist because they have an audience. Let's put a stop to it.
