Park to host Santa, hold light-up

WELLSBURG Brooke Hills Park will hold a brunch with Santa Claus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 5 in the parks clubhouse.

The cost is $5 each and includes brunch, a photo with Santa and treat.

Reservations should be made no later than Thursday by calling (304) 737-1236. The park also will hold its Christmas light-up that day at 6 p.m. Music will be provided by a local church choir, and refreshments will be served.

Lodge women to hold dinner

WELLSBURG The Women of the Wellsburg Loyal Order of the Moose will hold a fundraising dinner from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 6 at the lodge at 844 Main St. The cost is $7 for the dinner, which will include baked steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, salad, rolls, dessert and coffee or iced tea. Take-out is available by calling (304) 737-1552.

Authority accepting plastics

The Brooke County Solid Waste Authority is now accepting recyclable plastics at its bins at the Wellsburg Rite Aid, Follansbee and Wellsburg middle Schools, Hooverson Heights Primary School.

Only plastic containers bearing the numbers 1 or 2 within a triangle can be used. Such containers usually include milk jugs, laundry detergent and shampoo bottles and clear or green soft drink, sports drink or water bottles. The board cant accept plastics labeled 3 through 7 or any styrofoam and must pay to have them dumped at a local landfill when it receives them. In anticipation of wide response, an additional bin has been added at the Rite Aid site. One of the bins will be designated for plastics and metals, while the other will be for paper only. Letters from Santa available

WELLSBURG The Friends of the Brooke County Public Library have again agreed to assist Santa Claus in sending letters to good boys and girls in the area.

The letters, which are addressed to each child by name, are available for $1.75 each.

The group also is selling personalized childrens books, which have a wide variety of themes and include the recipients name and other personal information about the child.

The cost is $14 each for the books, which the group suggests make unique Christmas presents. Inquiries can be made at the Brooke County Library at 945 Main St. or the Follansbee Branch Library at 844 Main St.

Bethany women busy with projects

BETHANY The GFWC-WV Bethany Womans Club met Oct. 16 at Bethany Memorial Church with President Sydma Hatzapoulous presiding.

Devotions were led by Connie McVicar, and reports were heard from Beverly Chambers, secretary; and Ruth Tye, treasurer.

Helen Moren was endorsed as a candidate for the position of GFWC-WV state treasurer.

Members are selling Uncle Als Pecans. Donations were made to Clubwoman Magazine, the GFWC-WV Scholarship Fund and Anna Jarvis Home.

Members will be making Thanksgiving favors for the Valley Haven Home and Anns Country Retreat.

Also, knitted hats will be donated to the outreach committee of Bethany Memorial Church for the Save the Children project.

A book review on Wesley the Owl was presented by Hatzapoulous. Refreshments were served by McVicar and Hatzapoulous.

The next meeting will be held Dec. 14 and include a covered dish dinner for family and former members of Kiwanis Club.

RSVP holding quilt drawing

FOLLANSBEE The Brooke-Hancock-Ohio-Marshall Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is holding a drawing for a full-size quilt made and donated by Margaret Freshwater.

Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and will be available at the RSVP office at 948 Main St. up to Dec. 15.

The program has received many donations of 4-ply yarn for Christmas lap robes made for residents of local nursing homes but welcomes more additions.

City to hold light-up program

FOLLANSBEE The city will hold its Christmas light-up program at 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Ray Stoaks Plaza by the Follansbee City Building.

There will be music by the Brooke High School Madrigal Choir, a Christmas carol sing-along and refreshments.

Help with heating costs available

WEIRTON C.H.A.N.G.E. Inc. will be accepting applications for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program beginning Dec. 7.

The program assists eligible households with the cost of home heating through direct cash payments or payments to utility companies on their behalf.
