Legion gearing up for Toys for Tots program

November 9, 2009 - By MARK J. MILLE, Staff writer

TORONTO - The American Legion Post 86 is gearing up for its annual Toys for Tots program by holding a series of fundraisers through December.

Legion post officers wanted to get a jump on fundraising this year because they fear the need will be greater than in past years due to the downturn in the economy.

"We hope people will come and participate in the fundraisers," said Linda McCourt, president of the post ladies auxiliary. "We think because of the bad economy the need will be greater."

The program includes the Legion collecting donations of toys and funds while obtaining a list from local schools of possible families that may need assistance in providing children with toys for Christmas. The Legion then contacts the families and compiles Christmas boxes of toys, which then are picked up by parents at the Legion at 415 Market St.

"On Nov. 7 we are going to host a dance with disc jockey Mac," said McCourt, adding the dance will be from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Legion's social room. "(Those attending) can bring either a new toy or a donation. That will be the kickoff fundraiser."

The Legion also will host a craft show from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 28-29 in the Legion hall, said McCourt. Crafters are invited to rent tables at $10 per table, with all proceeds from table rental going toward Toys for Tots, she added. The public is encouraged to come to the Legion hall and purchase crafts from local vendors.

"We also will be selling soup during the event," McCourt said, adding all proceeds will go toward the program. "The public is invited to rent the tables."

Those wishing to rent tables must contact the Legion by Nov. 25 by calling (740) 537-9317.

"Our final fundraiser will be from 8 p.m. to midnight Dec. 12 with a dance hosted by DJ Ted," said McCourt. "Admission will be a (monetary) or new toy donation."

McCourt said last year's Legion-sponsored Toys for Tots program assisted more than 200 Toronto-area children. Local citizens, businesses and organizations also are being asked to help make Christmas brighter for area children as well, she added.

"We've already sent out more than 120 letters (requesting donations)," McCourt said. "Any donations will be greatly appreciated because I know (donors) have been affected by the economy as well."

The Legion also has a toy donation barrel at Stacey's IGA grocery store where those who wish can deposit new or clean used toys. McCourt added Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla also usually donates toys for the program.

Those wishing to make a donation can send checks payable to the Toronto American Legion Post 86 Toys for Tots to American Legion Post 86, 415 Market St., Toronto, OH 43964.

"We want to put a smile on children's faces at Christmas," said McCourt. "Christmas is for children, and we want to make Christmas happy for every child."
