11 p.m.: Wintersville Fire Levy Passes
By Mark J. MillerTORONTO - A five-year, 1-mill levy for village fire department services passed easily during Tuesday's election, according to unofficial results from the Jefferson County Board of Elections.
Tallies Tuesday show voters giving the nod to the levy by a margin of 380 votes, or 74 percent for, and 131 votes, or 25 percent against. The levy generates about $75,000 annually for the department, according to village Fire Chief Rob Herrington.
The funds will be used to purchase firefighting equipment, including protective fire gear, breathing apparatus, maintenance on the fire station, continued training and helping the department make payments on financed equipment, Herrington had previously said.
