Local 1223 to meet in Yorkville

Possible startup of Severstal plant to be discussed

By DAVE GOSSETT, Staff writer
POSTED: October 25, 2009

YORKVILLE - Members of the United Steelworkers Local 1223 are being urged to attend a special meeting Tuesday at the union hall in Yorkville.

Dolores Lopez of the local union said all 323 union members are encouraged to attend a special membership meeting at 10 a.m. or 3 p.m.

"Our union leadership will be discussing the possible startup of the Severstal Yorkville plant operations that has been shut down since May," said Lopez.

She declined to discuss additional details until after the union membership meeting.

Most of the Severstal steelmaking operations in the Ohio Valley have been shut down for several months.

Severstal idled the furnaces and other facilities at its Steubenville South plant at Mingo Junction about 13 months ago and has run its Martins Ferry finishing line for a brief period over the summer to complete an order. The coke plant at Follansbee continues to operate at a reduced level of production and employment.

The company has said several times during the past year that it would restart units only if demand indicated the production would be needed. It has idled its mill at Warren and continues to operate units at Dearborn, Mich., and Sparrows Point, Md.

The Yorkville plant is a steel finishing operation.

A telephone message left for a Severstal spokesperson was not returned.

This isn't about NAFTA, GATT, or any election or the collection of union dues. This about a closed plant restarting, and men and women returning to work. This is about two opposing groups working together to put food on tables, and shelter overhead. Its good news, guys, so get your heads out of your rears and see this for what it is.

You are 100% accurate JamesT. There is no justice for the WORKING CLASS. Union dues have become a TAX that is collected for the political machines.

The Obama Administration WILL allow the present anti dumping foriegn steel tariffs to expire as Clinton and Carter did. The union strongly campaigns and give the union due money to the Democatic Party. The very party who gave you NAFTA, GATT, WTO, Kyoto Summit, Global Warming, EPA Fines, high taxes ect.. You get the government you deserve. See Weirton? Your'e next!!!!
