TORONTO - Seniors at Toronto High School can now able to obtain a jump on college by enrolling in college-level courses.

Several teachers at the school have recently become certified professor adjuncts, enabling them to teach college courses at the school, according to Principal Bob Gill.

"These are college credits they can earn while going to high school," said Gill, adding the courses are taught by certified professors through the Jefferson County Campus of Eastern Gateway Community College. "We now have four adjunct professors at the high school."

Gill said the current courses include English 101 and 102 and literature, taught by teacher Lynn Donohue.

"Students can get nine possible credits for college (by taking these classes)," said Gill. "We have 15 or so seniors who are taking at least one of these English courses. Some are taking all three. These classes are being taught as a regular class during the day."

Gill said educator Rick Hlivko was now certified to teach college-level college algebra and college trigonometry and statistics.

"The college algebra is worth four credits, while the trigonometry/statistics is worth three credits," Gill continued. "We also offer online (college) courses. Online courses include psychology, sociology, basic anatomy and medical terminology. About 35 percent of the senior class is taking at least one course."

Gill said educators Barb Pritts and Jane Brower also have attained professorship status and will be teaching college courses next year, including life and physical sciences.

"(The college credits) are transferable to any college or university that accepts credits from Eastern Gateway Community College," Gill said. "Last year, 30 percent of the senior class received between seven and 20 semester college credit hours. It's free to any senior at the high school."
