Quaker Day set for Sept. 19
From staff reportsRICHMOND - The annual Quaker Day celebration sponsored by the Richmond Community Historical Society returns to the village from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 19.
A society tradition of more than 25 years, the event will be held in and around the Crew House Museum on Main Street, with visitors welcome to tour the facility and also enjoy outside offerings from vendors, according to Sandy Judy, event chairman.
Society members will be selling commemorative handmade 1-pound salt crocks and mugs inscribed with "Richmond, Ohio." The crocks are $20; the mugs, $12.
While vegetable soup warmed over an open fire has been a main staple at the event, Judy said something new is being offered in its place.
"We're calling it Henry Crew's own bean soup," said Judy, explaining that Crew was a Richmond entrepreneur in the meat-packing business and the first owner of the home that now serves as a museum of Richmond memorabilia.
The soup will be available by the bowl or quart for a donation along with samples of old-fashioned cobblers.
The event also will include several vendors, among them the Richmond Lions Club selling hot dogs and beverages; baked goods and a white elephant sale by the Richmond Lioness Club; Sam Gill of Woodland Trails greenhouse and nursery; strombolis and outdoor furniture by Darrin and Tina Judy; and re-enactors costumed in period attire.
A collection of the late Don Thompson's Richmond photographs will be on display at the city building.
"It's our main fundraiser for supporting the Crew House, to maintain the building and for utility costs," Judy said of the Quaker Day event.
The historical society welcomes new members, she added, noting it meets every other month on the third Tuesday at the Crew House.
The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
