Records broken as fair comes to an endAugust 24, 2009 - By ESTHER MCCOY, Staff writerSMITHFIELD - Records were broken during the Jefferson County Junior Fair livestock auction held Saturday at the fairgrounds, making two area 4-H members happy. The grand champion market goat raised by Kayla Huff of the Free Spirits 4-H Club brought $1,050, and Branden DeFrank of the Wildwood Critters 4-H Club received $9 per pound for his market steer weighing 1,346 pounds. DeFrank also had this year's Ohio State Fair market steer winner. Other prices during the auction held steady, or a donor would raise the amount to be received by the 4-H or FFA member to a price more in line with the other animals. Apex Environmental purchased the grand champion market goat, raised by Huff. John Lemon, a Classy Kids member, had the reserve champion goat that brought $275 from B&R Livestock of Jewett. Billy Birney, served as an auctioneer and ringman, and other auctioneers were Gary and Brad Cain, Rick Sponhaltz, Steve Birney and Wayne Kolb. Brothers Geary and Mark Teramana of Albert Motors were buyers of DeFrank's grand champion market steer at more than $12,000. Malania Birney of the Cross Creek Tomahawks 4-H club had the reserve market steer weighing 1,358 pounds, which purchased by Steer Syndicate at $4 per pound. Steer Syndicate is comprised of Albright Farms, Curry Drilling, Vitello Contracting, Kuester Implement, C.H. Birney Farms, MJC Farms, North Star Metals, Country Kettle and Kendle Farms. Faith Jancura, a Country Kids 4-H member, had the division 1 champ, with Piney Fork Presbyterian Church as the buyer at $2 per pound, to be donated to the Lunches with Love program. The division 1 reserve champion was purchased by Allan Oil and Quik Mart at $4 per pound. Tyler Ramsey, Purple Circle, had division 2 champ, with Kuester Implement as the buyer at $1.75 per pound; Greg Piergallini, Golden Horseshoe, division 2 reserve champ, Wintersville Trophy, $1.75 per pound; Mario Piergallini, Golden Horseshoe, class 3 winner, Big 4 Development, $1.75 per pound; Abby Vein, Wildwood Critters, class 5 winner, Fred Abdalla, $1.50 per pound; Brendan Powley, 43 Ramblers, class 6 winner, Abdalla, $1.25 per pound, with the beef going to Urban Mission and Salvation Army; Amanda Grafton, FFA, class 9 winner, Jefferson Landmark, $1.50 per pound; Kiersten Harris, Wildwood Critters, county's best bred grand champion, Jefferson County Farm Bureau, $1.70 per pound; and Blake Finley, Cross Creek Tomahawks, reserve best county bred, Trinity Health System, $1.75 per pound. Logan Morrison raised the grand champion beef feeder steer, with Apex Environmental as the buyer at $7.25 per pound. Dustin McAfee, Cross Creek Tomahawks, had the grand champion dairy beef feeder calf, with Jefferson Landmark as the buyer at $1.40 per pound. Trevor Waller had the reserve champion with Apex as the buyer at $2.60 per pound. Brooke Piergallini, a Golden Horseshoe member, had the grand champion market lamb, weighing 140 pounds and purchased by Dino Piergallini and Sons at $7 per pound. Brittney Vargo, Windy Ridge member, had the reserve grand champion market lamb, weighing 135 pounds and purchased by Fabian Show Cattle at $3.50 per pound. Tyler Stagani, 43 Ramblers, had the division 1 champion, with Kuester Implement as the buyer at $2.25 per pound; Kayla Vargo, division 2 champion, Apex Environmental, $2.25 per pound; Allison Yanssens, Golden Horseshoe, division 1 reserve, Chris Ott attorney buyer at $2.45 per pound; Brooke Piergallini, division 2 reserve, Jefferson Landmark, $1.50 per pound; Tiffany Ruckman, independent, class 1 winner, Carol's Lawn Service, $1.50 per pound; Adrienne Yanssens, Golden Horseshoe, class 2 winner, Michelle Miller's Law Office, $3 per pound; Scott Ruckman, independent, class 4 winner, David Scarpone, $2 per pound; and Brianna Piergallini, Golden Horseshoe, class 7 winner, Argo Sales, $2.25 per pound. About 125 market hogs were sold, according to organizers. Taylor Johnson, a Free Spirits 4-H member, had the 276-pound grand champion market hog, which was purchased by Valley Farms and Meats, Strausburg, at $6.75 per pound. Harley Ehrman, Free Spirits, had the reserve champion market hog, weighing 273 pounds, and purchased by Apex Landfill at $4.50 per pound. Abby Vein, Wildwood Critters, had the class 3 winner, with Birchway Farms buyer at $2.25 per pound; Graceon Ehrman, Free Spirits, class 2 winner, Kuesters, $2.50 per pound; Harley Ehrman, class 4 winner, Riesbecks, $2.10 per pound and donated to the 4-H endowment fund; Brooke Whitehill, American Outbackers, class 6 winner, Joe LaPrete, $1.80 per pound; Daniel Bahana, Free Spirits, class 11 winner, Albert Motors, $1.80 per pound; Cordelia Roth, independent, class 12 winner, Roiling Hills Farm, $2.20 per pound; Kiersten Harris, class 1 winner, Monsanto, $3.10 per pound; Daniel Bahana, class 5 winner, Professional Tire and Alignment, $2; Madison Thompson, Backwoods Gang, class 7 winner, Kuesters, $2; and Ryan Wood, American Outbackers, class 10 winner, M&M Hardware, $2 per pound. Erin Hartzell, a Classy Kids member, had the grand champion pen of three meat chickens purchased by Car Medic at $300, and Bryce Throckmorton, Free Spirits member, had the reserve champions purchased by M&M Hardware at $275. Two brothers raised the champion ducks. Hayden Brown had the grand champion ducks purchased by Wal-Mart at $300 for the pen of two and donated to the Urban Mission, and Hunter Brown was the reserve champions, with Crestview Veterinarians as the buyer at $200. William Glover, Windy Ridge member, had the grand champion goose, with Riesbecks as the buyer at $200. Katie Hartzell, a Classy Kids member, had the grand champion turkey with Car Medic as the buyer at $500. Hartzell donated her proceeds to the Fisher House Foundation to provide a home for families of injured members of the military receiving care at major military and veterans hospitals. Hunter Brown had the reserve champion turkey, with Monsanto the buyer at $225. Hannah Means, Liberty Gals and Guys, had the grand champion pen of three rabbit fryers with M&M Hardware buyer at $300; and Breanna Meadows, Free Spirits, was the reserve grand champion, with Crestview Veterinarian the buyer at $175. The bidding took place following the buyer’s dinner and before bidding for lambs, feeder calves and market steers. Barnhouse signed the print, which Judy purchased for $700. - Esther McCoy
