Henry W. Carter Sr.

CARTER, Henry W., Sr., 86, of Bergholz, Ohio, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2009, in Trinity Medical Center West, Steubenville, following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Mason County, W.Va., March 16, 1923.

He retired in 1979 as a battery foreman at the coke plant for National Steel and was a life long farmer.

He was a member of the Jenkins Lodge F&AM 471, Irondale; a member of the National Steel 25-Year Club; a member of the East Springfield Senior Citizens Club and a Methodist by faith.

He is preceded in death by his father and stepfather, Ethrim Carter and John Melton; by his mother, Oma Dewberry Carter Melton; by his first wife, Leanore (Dunn) Carter, by two sons, Henry Carter Jr. and Richard Carter; a brother, Herman and a sister, Margaret Liggett.

He is survived by his wife, Alice (DeVault) Carter; three sons, Kenneth (Susan) Carter, Richmond, Ralph (Cheri) Carter and Jerry Carter, both of Toronto; three daughters, Lois (Dave) Hope, Richmond, Joyce (Jim) Burkey, Wintersville, Kathleen (Jim) Robinson, Irondale; two daughters-in-law, Cheryle Carter, Steubenville and Opal Hoover, Wintersville; two brothers, Kenneth (Mazy) Carter, Hartford, W.Va. and Carson Carter, Lancaster, Ohio; a stepson, Charles (Valerie) Chastain, Richmond; two stepdaughters, Mary Jean Jackson and Kathryn (Ken) Lindsey, both of Pismo Beach, Calif.; 18 grand- children, 25 great-grand- children, 8 stepgrand- children and 3 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Everhart-Bove Funeral Home, 110 West Main St., Richmond, on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with the Reverend Tom Snodgrass officiating then preceding to Ft. Steuben Burial Estates.

Masonic services will be held Sunday at 7 p.m.
