Newburn’s Post 557 shuts out Radvansky’s Post 86
By STEPHANIE ELVERD, sports writerWINTERSVILLE - Wintersville pitcher Tim Newburn led Post 557 to a win Thursday, by shutting down and ultimately shutting out visiting Toronto at Muth Field.
Newburn allowed Post 86 just four hits while going the distance in a 2-0 win for his team. Toronto ace Mike Radvansky, who also went all the way, proved just effective. He gave up just five scattered hits.
"It was a great pitched game by both kids. It was just two left-handers battling," Wintersville coach Don Young said. "Newburn did a great job of keeping them off balance and we did not get much from Radvansky. Both pitchers threw a whale of a game."
Newburn finished with three strikeouts and two walks. Radvansky fanned eight but walked five.
But it wasn't the base-on-balls that hurt Post 86. Post 557 scored both runs on passed balls.
"We took advantage of couple situations. Bunting was key and we kept moving on the bases," Young added. "We were really pleased with our base running."
Wintersville scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning. Adam Young walked and Chris Kotur reached on a bunt. Daniel Dunlevy singled to load the bases. Young attempted to steal home and was put out at the plate. Kotur moved to third on the throw home and scored later on a passed ball.
Post 557 scratched out its second run in the fourth. Dunlevy recorded his second base hit, and stole second and third before scoring on a passed ball.
"We played the best game we played all year. I was happy and surprised," Young said. " We played solid defense and our offense did what we had to do to score runs."
Mike Garman led Toronto with two base hits. Jordan Cooper and J.J. Miclea added a single apiece.
Josh Malesky singled to account for Wintersville's five hits.
