WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Sheriff's Department is investigating a fire that spread through a single-story home on state Route 67 near Greens Run Wednesday afternoon.

Bethany Pike Assistant Fire Chief Doug Collins said Tom DeGarmo, the owner of the single-story house at 103 Bethany Pike, wasn't home and a neighbor was able to rescue a dog that was inside.

Collins said firefighters from the Bethany Pike, Bethany, McKinleyville and Wellsburg departments were called to the scene at about 3 p.m. and contained the blaze within about an hour.

Sheriff's deputies at the scene said because the house was without utlities, the fire is considered suspicious.
