Susan I. Dolan
DOLAN, Susan I. Holzhauser, of Sandusky, Ohio, died Monday evening shortly before midnight in Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, after valiantly battling breast cancer for the past four years.
She was born April 9, 1948, in Sandusky, daughter of the late John J. Holzhauser and Gloria (Cunningham) Holzhauser. She was a 1966 graduate of Sandusky High School, received her bachelor of science degree in education from OSU in 1970, and her master's degree in educational administration from OSU in 1976. She retired from the Sandusky City School System in 2006, after 28 years of teaching. Each day was a new adventure in her classroom, and she enjoyed every year of her teaching career.
She was a life member of AMVETS Auxiliary, where she was a past president, treasurer, PRO, and secretary. She was also a life member of VFW Post 2529, past president of Ontario School PTO, a member of OSU Alumni Club, Eagles Aerie 2875, Sandusky Power Squadron, College Club, past president/ treasurer/secretary of Cedar Cove Association and a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling and boating, and "multi-tasking!" She will be remembered for her love of "garage sales and bargain shopping." Her positive attitude in battling cancer was evident in her updates to family and friends and her desire to help others understand and cope with the complications associated with cancer and the effects of positive thinking.
She was preceded in death by her father, John J. Holzhauser, paternal grandparents John and Amanda Holzhauser, maternal grandparents Leslie and Lela Cunningham, uncle Leslie (Frenchie) Cunningham and aunt Ruby (Cunningham) Grubb.
Susan is survived by her husband of 36 years, Patrick J. Dolan of Sandusky, children: Shawn (Sandusky) and Erin (Massillon); mother, Gloria (Cunningham) Holzhauser (Sandusky); brother, Glenn (Mickey) Holzhauser (Sandusky); sister, Sandra (Stephen) Deering (Monroeville); aunts: Vivian (Cunningham) Vickery (Monroeville) and Marilyn (Mischler) Cunningham (Sandusky); uncle, Harold Holzhauser (Sandusky); sisters-in-law: Kathleen (Nick) Gordon (Ypsilanti, MI) and Anna Mae McCloskey (Toledo); brother-in-law, Leo (Jeanne) Dolan (Hebron, KY); 12 nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Friday, from 9-11 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, 503 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Reverend John Mawhirter will officiate.
She will be laid to rest during a private family burial at Sandhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Erie County Cancer Services, 505 E.
