TORONTO - The city chamber-sponsored Robert Urich Memorial 5-Mile Run/5K Walk is set to begin at 8 a.m. for runners and 8:15 a.m. for walkers on July 4 at the city high school.
The annual event and fundraiser for a sarcoma cancer fund in the late actor's name and other Gem City Days events will be similar to those of years past, with a certified, relatively flat course, race packs, T-shirts for the first 150 participants and awards and medallions for the winners, according to Mike Biasi, race organizer.
"The race begins at 8 a.m., but those participating can register at the high school beginning at 6:30 a.m. until 7:45 a.m.," said Biasi. "We average about 120 participants every year."
Biasi also said pre-registration forms can be picked up at area Kwik Kings.
"(Participants) also can register online at toronto-ohio-chamber.com," Biasi added. "Most of the proceeds go toward the Heather and Robert Urich Fund for Sarcoma Research, but we also use some of the funds for future Gem City Days celebrations, which is organized by the Focus in Toronto organization."
Registration to participate is $10 per person, and an aid station will be available at the halfway point for the course, which begins at the high school, winds through the city and ends at Clarke Hinkle Stadium. Prizes include trophies for first-, second- and third-place men and women winners for runners in age categories 14 and younger; ages 15-19; 20-19; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; and 60 and older, said Biasi. Also awarded will be trophies for overall men and women walkers, he added. Registration forms also can be sent to Valley Converting Co., P.O. Box 279, 405 Daniels St., Toronto, OH 43964.
