From staff reportsBEVERLY - Steubenville Post 33 head coach Mark Stacy has pleaded with his squad for more consistent play early in the season. In a two-day span during which Post 33 faced powerhouses Beverly/Lowell and Lancaster in doubleheaders, the team responded to its coach, winning three-of-four games.
First, Steubenville beat host Beverly/Lowell in both games of a doubleheader, Saturday.
In Game 1, Toby Longo went the distance, striking out eight and walking three, as Steubenville trumped Post 389/750, 2-0.
Jordan Meyer led the Steubenville offense with a single and a double. Jeremy Banks and Anthony Pierro each had RBI hits for the victors.
In Game 2, Post 33 scored twice in the top of the first inning and twice in the top of the fifth frame en route to a 6-4 decision.
Mike McDonald earned the victory, striking out three and walking two in six innings pitched. Darin Heatherington picked up the save by shutting down the host's bats in the seventh inning.
Banks had a home run, a single and two RBI to pace the Post 33 offense. Mickey Bednar added a home run, a single and an RBI, while Jordon Meyer chipped in with three singles and an RBI for Steubenville.
On Sunday, Post 33 traveled to Lancaster and split with Post 11.
In Game 1, Steubenville scored four runs in the top of the second inning on its way to a 6-3 victory. Brad Hughes earned the win, striking out three and walking two in seven innings pitched.
Bednar led the Steubenville offense with a single and two doubles. Mitch Bainbridge added two singles and two RBI, while Sean Laukert pitched in with two singles and an RBI.
Post 33 took its first loss of the weekend in Game 2, as Lancaster scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for an 11-10 win.
Meyer took the loss, striking out one and walking three in relief of starting pitcher Jordan Teramana.
Banks continued his huge weekend with two home runs and a total of five RBI. Anthony Pierro chipped in with two singles and Justin Teramana had a single and an RBI.
Lancaster's Brady Stewart earned the victory on the mound, striking out four and walking none in 1 1/3 innings pitched.
Steubenville's record now stands at 10-9-1 and Post 33 will travel to St. Clairsville for a 6 p.m. start Tuesday.
Steubenville will return to Vaccaro Field, facing Weirton in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
