Toronto Voters Decide Three Races Tuesday
Mark J. MIller9:50 p.m.: TORONTO City voters decided three races during Tuesday's primary election, including those for president of City Council, three councilman at large positions and 4th Ward councilman.
According to unofficial tallies from the Jefferson County Board of Elections, incumbent Tom Thomas, 214 N. Third St., defeated challenger Frank Hostina, 907 N. Third St., for the Democratic nomination for council president in the November General Election.
Unofficial tallies show Thomas earning 311 votes or 65 percent to Hostina's 164 votes or 34 percent.
Unofficial tallies Tuesday showed three incumbent councilmen at large, including Ron Holmes, 631 N. Fourth St.; Joe Motto, 812 Ridge Ave.; and Glenn Dickinson, 906 S. River Ave.; defeating challenger J. David Core, 617 Henry St .
The tallies show Motto earning 316 votes or 28 percent; Holmes earning 288 votes or 25 percent; Dickinson earning 285 votes or 25 percent; and Core earning 235 votes, or 20 percent.
Paula Roche, 521 N. Third St., Democratic incumbent for the city's 4th Ward council seat, lost to challenger Ralph LeMasters, 903 N. River Ave., earning LeMasters the Democratic nomination for the seat in the November General Election. LeMasters earned 91 votes or 60 percent to Roche's 59 votes or 40 percent.
LeMasters couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday evening.
Other Democratic incumbent office holders running unopposed in Tuesday's primary included 1st Ward Councilman Diane Julio; 2nd Ward Councilman Dorothy Blaner; 3rd Ward Councilman Jason Fogle; and city Treasurer Jim Orsini.
However, Julio will face independent candidate Maureen Howard, 1411 Madison Ave.; and Blaner will face independent candidate Gayle Troski, 905 Biltmore Ave.; in the November General Election.
No Republican candidates in Toronto filed for office in Tuesday's primary.
