BriefsDecember 13, 2008Brooke senior invited to baseball classic FOLLANSBEE - Christopher Fluharty of Follansbee, a senior at Brooke High School, has been invited to participate in Elite Sports' 10th annual King Kamehameha Baseball Classic to be held June 16-23 in Honolulu. Fluharty is among high school athletes from throughout the U.S. invited to play under the direction of college coaches and has been named to a team coached to be coached by Scott Jennings, head baseball coach at Hagerstown Community College of Hagerstown, Md. A varsity baseball and basketball player at Brooke, he has earned a grade point average of 3.4. Following graduation, he plans to attend college and study accouting and business management. He is the son of Kelly Fluharty and grandson of Duane Fluharty. He is raising the $2,945 required for roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations and other expenses. Bethany College vice president named BETHANY - Scott D. Miller, president of Bethany College, has announced the appointment of Darin E. Fields as vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty. Fields, who will assume the post on Feb. 16, comes to Bethany following a five-year stint as dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He will supervise Bethany's academic and student life division. Miller said of Fields, "His strong administrative background, his outstanding reputation as an academician and many years of outstanding teaching experience make him an ideal fit for Bethany College. We look forward to adding Dr. Fields' innovation, creativity and leadership to our growing and vibrant academic community at Bethany." Fields was selected from more than 80 nominations and applications to replace Michael Mihalyo, who resigned in late October to accept a position with the Appalachian College Association in Berea, Ky. "I am pleased to join an institution with such a strong reputation as a national liberal arts college of distinction," Fields said. "I look forward to working with Dr. Miller and the faculty to build on the strong foundation of academic rigor and values-centered education that is already in place at Bethany." Fields earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Arizona in 1986 and received a master's degree and doctorate from the University of Delaware in 1989 and 1992, respectively. After teaching at the University of Delaware and Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Fields served at the latter university as chairman of the division of humanities. He received the Outstanding Faculty Award at Wilkes in 1994 and was honored as the Carpenter Outstanding Teacher of the Year at Wilkes in 2001. Fields will reside in Highland Hearth on campus, the historic vice president's house. He and his wife Pam have two children. Winter carnival to be held MOUNDSVILLE - The Marshall County Family Resource Network will hold a winter carnival from noon to 6 p.m. Dec. 31 on Jefferson Avenue. The event will include live music, karaoke, wing-eating contests, inflatable attractions for children and games for all ages, food, crafts and a fireworks display at 6 p.m. |
