Church begins GriefShare program

November 21, 2008 - By MARK J. MILLER, Staff writer

TORONTO - The First United Methodist Church is beginning a new program for the community aimed at those who may be suffering because of the recent loss of a loved one.

The free public program, GriefShare, is a non-denominational, biblically centered program using videos and group discussions. The program's second session is set from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at the church located at the corner of Sixth and Main streets, according to the Rev. Kevin Rinkes, church pastor.

"We're going to begin the program with what we're calling 'Surviving the Holidays,'' said Rinkes. "After the initial session we'll have an ongoing program through March. It's going to be led by Brenda Cottrell. She's one of the lay speakers at the church."

The sessions, which are free of charge and open to all in the community, are scheduled from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27; Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24; and March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, said Rinkes.

"This program is for those beyond the church walls as well," said the pastor. "(Those attending) can begin at any point. If they miss sessions they can still come to the next one and they won't be behind."

The goals are to develop a support group for those who recently have lost relatives and loved ones, and each seminar will include a detailed video presentation starring experts on dealing with grief followed by a group discussion. Those participating also will work through a workbook on grieving, said Rinkes.

He noted the catalyst for the program is the number of church and community members grieving over the deaths of someone close to them.

"We know (that grieving) is beyond the church walls," said Rinkes. "We're trying to reach out to the community to those who may be grieving.

"There is no charge (for the program)," continued Rinkes, adding the program is "Christ-centered. If someone would like to make a donation for the cost of their workbook, that would be accepted. The workbook is used every day during a time of grief. It's a devotional guide."

No registration is required, and those attending are welcome to attend with no prior notice.
