Wellsburg Elks plan ‘Hoop Shoot’

Wellsburg Elks Lodge 1553 will hold its annual "Hoop Shoot" free throw contest Dec. 13 at the Follansbee Middle School gymnasium. Registration will start at 10 a.m.

The competition is open to all Brooke County boys and girls in the following age groups: 8 to 9, 10 to 11 and 12 to 13.

Age will be determined by the birth date as of April 1. Participants must complete a form and have signed permission from their parents or guardians.

Refreshments will be provided, and a basketball will be awarded to winners in each category. Winners in each age group will participate in the district contest to be held Jan. 17 at 10:30 a.m. in the Millsop Community Center.

The lodge will hold its annual Elks Memorial Service in the lodge ballroom at 834 Charles St., Wellsburg, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.

Officers will conduct the service on behalf of their deceased past exalted rulers and members who have died since Dec. 1, 2007.

Frank Haas of Wells burg, a lay pastor, will speak. Ashley Poarch of Wellsburg will provide solos.

Memorial books will be presented to John Cole, president of the Brooke County Public Library board, in memory of George Edward McFadden, David C. Fowler, Gerald R. Huggins, Edwin Wayne Virgin and Charles R. Knapp.

Family and lodge members are invited to attend.

Light refreshments will be served after the service.

Survivors and Seekers meet

Survivors and Seekers held its monthly luncheon meeting with Darlene Pehanich presiding and Herbert Woodland offering prayer.

John Rodesh spoke on meeting place changes.

Carolyn Bever supplied a flower arrangement for the door prize that was won by Nancy Newburn.

The next meeting will be Dec. 12.

St. Anthony documentary to be shown

A documentary on the former St. Anthony Parish will be shown Sunday at 3 p.m. at Franciscan University's Pugliese Auditorium in Sts. Cosmas and Damian Hall.
