Howards to perform for OV opera guild
By MARIAN HOUSER, Community editorThe Howard Family, teachers and professional musicians, will perform Tuesday at the Ohio Valley Opera Guild's annual membership meeting to be held at St. Florian Hall.
The hall will have a Russian ambiance as tribute is paid to Russian composer, Pyot Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
There will be Russian food with hors d'oeuvres and wine starting at 6 p.m.
A brief meeting to elect a new slate of board members will be held, followed by dinner.
Tickets are $25 and reservations are required.
The Howards will be joined by 90-year-old Peter Payul Adamiak, a Pittsburgh bass player.
He has been recognized by the International Musician's Union as one of the oldest active bass players.
The Howard's program will include classical, show tunes, polkas, pop and contemporary music.
Hampton Inn accepts toys for mission
Hampton Inn has a new project that will benefit Mission Ministries and the children of the area.
It is accepting donations of toys for the mission and all toys will be accepted. But, if you donate a new one valued at $10 or more, you will be placed in a drawing for a free night's stay in a whirlpool room.
The drawing will be held Dec. 3 at the inn at 820 University Blvd.
Author encourages respect for youth
David George of Bethany, author of "Be Unique Be You and Live!" will present a program on "Treating Teenagers with Respect" at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Brooke County Public Library.
George said he is a firm believer in treating everyone with courtesy and respect using the foundation of the Golden Rule. He will discuss his ideas on treating teenagers with respect and helping them develop high-levels of self-esteem, which he said is key to helping them through adolescence.

Scio branch to have story time
The Scio Branch Library will have story time each Tuesday at 11 a.m. for children age 3 to first grade. There will be books, songs, crafts and learning skills offered. Children need to be registered by calling (740) 945-6811.
Rampaging Readers Reading Club will be held Nov. 13 at 3:30 p.m.for grades three through five. The book to be reviewed is "Ghosthunters and the Incredibly Revolting Ghost" by Cornelia Funke. Those interested in participating need to pick up a copy and be ready to discuss it.
Central Readers Reading Club, a new club for Harrison Central Middle School sixth- through eighth-grade pupils, will be Nov. 18 at 3:30 p.m. The book is "Hurt Go Happy" by Ginny Rorby.
The Book Tea Reading Club for those 18 years old and older will be held Nov. 25 at 3:30 p.m. The book "Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons" by Lorna Landvik will be discussed. This is a new day and time for the club..
Anthony Thomas candy bars are on sale by the Friends of the Scio Branch Library.
Rebekahs hold Friendship Night
Members of Naomi Rebekah Lodge 42 and guests from area lodges gathered for Friendship Night.
The evening included a ham and covered-dish supper and music by a quartet comprised of lodge members Carolyn Fowler, Arlene Smith, Hope Daugherty and Marsha Daugherty, who were accompanied by Marilyn Tallman on keyboard.
Tallman, the event's chairman, led two games, and prizes were awarded to attendees, including Tallman, who won the 50-50 drawing.
Noble Grand Mary K. Radvansky welcomed visitors, and the altar was draped in memory of deceased member Forrestine Wiegmann, who served for 62 years. Mary Barton read the names of members who are sick and in the hospital.
Verna Tarr, state president, thanked the host lodge for its help during the year, and Bess Ray, secretary of the Grand Lodge, announced October was Emergency and Disaster Month.
Attendees were invited by Carol Kennedy to the Newell Lodge's Friendship Night, which will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7.
Lions sponsoring concert trip
The Wellsburg Lions Club invites area residents to join them for a Dec. 12 concert at Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena featuring several 1950s and 60s singing groups.
Because of an error, the lineup will be different than what was previously announced.
The Doo Wop Holiday Reunion Show will feature Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Duprees, Kenny Vance and the Planotones, Jay Siegel and the Tokens featuring Jay Traynor of Jay and the Americans, Larry Chance of The Earls and The Vogues with Chuck Blasko.
The cost is $85 per person, which includes the show, transportation by motorcoach and dinner at a Pittsburgh restaurant.

Formals at Oglebay dance Dec. 6
The next Formals at Oglebay dance will be held at the Pine Room, Oglebay Park, Wheeling, Dec. 6 from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Music will be by Sonny Skye. Dress is formal. Advance admission is $30 and after Nov. 30, $35.
Dances are open to the public and there is no cost for first-time attendees. Reservations are required and can be made byPpatsche, (740) 699-0083.
