Catholic Central begins the year 3-0
By AARON PETCHAL, sports writerSTEUBENVILLE - The sweep is complete.
Wednesday, Amanda Looman recorded her second hat trick of the season leading the host Catholic Central girls soccer team to a 12-1 victory against Indian Creek.
"Yeah, they are looking good," Crusaders coach Chris Ledyard said about his 3-0 squad. "There was a lot of good passing today, and a lot of good runs. We worked on a lot of one-touch game at practice, and they did a nice job.
"They communicated well, and I didn't have to give anything on the sidelines. I just watched them have fun."
Indian Creek (0-5) head coach Jerry Emley declined to comment.
Looman has now scored a team-high eight goals on the season, and both of her hat tricks have come against the Redskins. Looman also scored two goals in the Crusaders' 4-1 victory Friday at Madonna.
The Crusaders opened the season with a 10-0 victory at Indian Creek.
Central senior Roberta Teramana tallied three goals and added an assist for the Crusaders, while Cassie Stevens scored two goals, and Meghan Spencer, Sarah Marrow, Erica Ledyard and Christiana Sengenberger all recorded goals.
Goalie Anna Shaw did not make a save.
Kristin Wendell scored the lone goal for the Redskins. Lea Schmitt tallied the assist. Freshman goalie Charlotte Wysong made 15 saves.
"I am happy with 3-0," coach Ledyard remarked. "I am looking forward to playing Big Red on Saturday, and mixing it up next week with John Marshall and Weir."
Central has averaged more than eight goals a game this season, while giving up less than a goal a game. The Crusaders have only allowed three shots through three games, however, two of the shots have gone in the goal.
Coach Ledyard gave credit to Indian Creek.
"I am impressed with the Indian Creek girls, because they keep going and keep going and keep playing," he said. "I know a lot of them are relatively new to the sport, and they don't seem to get discouraged at all. They just keep coming after it, which is awesome. It is really good to see. It is good to see Ohio Valley ball is getting better."
The Crusaders will return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday against city-rival Big Red at 1 p.m. at Harding Stadium. The Redskins visit Oak Glen at 5 p.m. on Sept. 4.
