Bureau sponsoring Life Line Screening
By MARIAN HOUSER, Community editorThe Jefferson County Farm Bureau is sponsoring Life Line Screening for ultrasound tests searching for carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease and atrial fibrillation screening for irregular heartbeat.
The four screenings cost $139, and socks and shoes are the only apparel that need to be removed for testing.
With 50 percent of stroke victims having no symptoms, these tests are important, a spokesman noted.
The screening will be at St. Florian Hall July 29, and pre-registration is required.

Kum Joyne Us Class gathers
The Kum Joyne Us Class of Kolmont Community Church met at the fellowship hall with 12 members present. Deanna Price gave the invocation for the covered-dish dinner.
Sara Peeler presided and Maxine Townsend opened with devotions, reading "Senior Moments; Shelly Bateman read "I Heard You the First Time" and Proverbs 18:13; Susie Fluharty read "Knock, Knock, Who's There?"; and Yvonne McGraw read "The Faith of a Child."
Shirley McCartney gave prayer for all requests, and roll call was answered with the attendees favorite scripture.
Members approved discontinuing the covered- dish dinner and serving dessert and a beverage at the August meeting.
Townsend will be in charge of devotions for the August meeting. Alice Brandon closed the meeting with prayer, and Peeler conducted the auction.
Fun Seekers hold annual picnic
The Fun Seekers held its annual picnic at Aracoma Park. Clyde and Mary Morelli and their committee hosted the 77 members present. Dino Rossi lead the devotions.
Games were played, and Myrtle Szuch gave table prizes to George Zrinyi, Dom Cilli, Marlene Krynak, Mel Corra, Ann Iachini, Jim Corra, Joann Mulrooney and Clyde Morelli. A special prize went to Betty Owens.
Jim Fulciniti, tour director, has the following trips scheduled: Aug. 5, 1950s Doo Wop at St. Florian Hall; Aug. 19, the Buffetman tribute to Jimmy Buffet at Wheeling Island Resort; Sept. 4, "Wicked" at the Benedum; and Dec. 7-9, Greenbrier Resort for "A Christmas to Remember." The Aug. 6 meeting will be at the Steubenville Country Club with a Hawaiian theme.
Garden center plans card party
The Wheeling Civic Garden Center, Oglebay Park, will sponsor a card party and salad luncheon Aug. 8 at 11 a.m.
The event is coordinated by board members, volunteers and staff of the garden center.
The cost of the event is $8 or $32 for a table of four. Reservations are required by calling (304) 242-0665. Reserve early as space is limited, a spokesman said.
Scio Fall Festival set for Aug. 13-16
The Scio Fall Festival will be held Aug. 13-16 and have the theme "75 and Still Alive."
The 16th-annual 1-mile run and 24th-annual 5K run will be held on opening day.
There will be flower exhibitions, cheerleader judging and fireworks on Thursday.
The 75th annual festival parade will be held on Friday, and a car show will be on the agenda for Saturday.
The Scio Museum and Historical Society will have displays and memorabilia from the village, former Scio High School and former Jewett-Scio High School.
The R.J. Spiker Fire Hall will have photos of past festivals and other community events on display.
There will be a crowing of a festival junior prince and princess, princess, queen and granny queen to close ceremonies Saturday.
Natural remedies to be discussed
Carol Hudachek, clinical pharmacy manager at Weirton Medical Center, will discuss herbal medications and how they have been used over the years at a meeting of the Jefferson Township Historical Society Saturday at 10 a.m.
The meeting will be at the White Church on Fire Road in Eldersville, Pa.
Reading program to end with a blast
Children who participated in the Brooke County Public Library and Follansbee Branch's "Catch the Reading Bug" summer reading program are invited to the Brooke County Public Library at 6 p.m. July 25 to the "Reading Bug Blast!", an evening of fun, games and prizes.
To gain admission, children must turn in their reading logs to either library by today. Because of limited space, only children and their guardians who have registered by Tuesday by calling (304) 737-1551 or (304) 527-0860 may attend the party. All children who turn in their logs will be eligible for prizes, however.
Veterans Office to be closed
The Veterans Office will be closed this afternoon at 2 p.m. and all day Friday for mandatory training.
