Futures Scholarships given by Mountaineer
CHESTER - Three Hancock County graduating seniors have been named recipients of the Mountaineer Futures Scholarship: Elizabeth Mazezka of Oak Glen, Peter Brogdon of Weir High and Doug Mato of Madonna.
Mazezka is the daughter of Marty and Judy Mazezka of 140 Annapolis Drive, New Cumberland. She will pursue a bachelor's degree in journalism at West Virginia University.
Brogdon is the son of Pete and Alesia Brogdon of 102 N. 11th St., Weirton. He will attend Glenville State College, where he plans to major in political science prior to pursuing his law degree.
Mato is the son of Doug and Marlene Mato of 138 Marsha Street in Weirton. He will attend West Liberty State College and pursue a bachelor's degree in biology with an emphasis on plants and animals.
Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort established the Mountaineer Futures Scholarship in 1998 to assist graduating seniors at each of Hancock County's three high schools.
Recipients of the scholarship receive $1,000 per year for each year of study towards their degree. In the 10 years since the scholarship was established, Mountaineer has provided $114,000 to fund the scholarships.
Unique to the program is the opportunity afforded recipients to acquire summer employment at Mountaineer as they work toward their degree.
The goal of the scholarship is also to provide recipients with a career opportunity at Mountaineer when they earn their degree.
