Masons to hold benefit brunch

Pilgrim Lodge 691 will hold a pancake and sausage brunch May 25 from noon to 3 p.m. to benefit the “Sponsor an Athlete” program of the Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation at the Masonic Temple, 227 N. Fourth St.

The program pays for athletes to participate in the Ohio Special Olympics held in Columbus in June each year.

This year’s goal of the 514 member lodges is to raise $200,000 in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Grand Lodge.

It is a “by donation” event.

House of Prayer honors mothers

House of Prayer Church, Riddles Run, near Brilliant, held a special Mother’s Day service with special honors accorded Dotty McGee of Rayland, oldest mother present; Christy Tompkins of Smithfield, youngest mother present; and Helen Greene of Dillonvale, mother of the year. Greene was selected through a drawing.

They received gifts, and flowers were given to each mother attending.



Red cross to hold lifeguard classes

The Jefferson County chapter of the American Red Cross will hold CPR/AED review classes for certification renewal for lifeguards Wednesday and May 28 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; June 1, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; and June 14, 9 a.m. to noon.

The fee is $27 and must be paid at least 48 hours before the day of the class. Classes will be held at the chapter headquarters, 81 Talbott Drive, Wintersville.

The review classes also are required for nursing students and emergency medical technicians.



Shrine club dinner Wednesday

Steubenville Shrine Club will hold its monthly dinner at Aladdin Land Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A minimum donation of $6 will be accepted.

The menu is roast pork loin, stuffing, vegetable, cole slaw, dessert and beverage.



Mingo reunion planners to meet

Mingo High All-School Reunion planning meeting will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Mingo Junction Knights of Columbus lounge.

The reunion will be held Aug. 1 and 2 at Aracoma Park.



Dem women hold essay contest

Brooke County Federation of Democratic Women sponsored its annual essay contest in April for eighth-grade pupils in Follansbee and Wellsburg middle schools. The topic was ”The Importance of Voting.”

Winners were Kevin Rowland of Follansbee Middle School and Tom Van Camp, Wellsburg Middle School.

They each received a $100 savings bond and had the opportunity to read their essays at the April Meet the Candidates Night. Rowland was congratulated by U.S. Rep. Alan B. Mollohan, D-Fairmont, guest speaker at the event.
