Charles R. Wilson

WILSON, Charles R. “Charlie,” 83, of Steubenville, Ohio, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in Valley Hospice North.

He was born May 28, 1924, in Camden, N.J., a son of the late Charles P. and Charlotte Pylant Wilson.

He was a member of Finley U.M. Church for 62 years, Friendship Sunday School Class, and served on several church committees. For 13 years, Charlie played Santa Claus for the Creegan Co. at the Fort Steuben Mall. A devoted member of Big Red Boosters, he was recognized with appreciation and a lifetime membership in 2007. As a volunteer for 22 years at Urban Mission, he was honored in 2007 as Male Volunteer of the Year. He served as president of the former Bloomingdale Lions Club. Charlie belonged to Pilgrim Lodge 691 F&AM, serving as assistant Tyler and was a 32nd Degree Mason of Scottish Rite. In 1986, he retired from Wheeling-Pitt after 39 years of dedicated service as a truck driver. A Navy veteran, Charlie served in WWII and the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, preceding Charlie in death were an infant great-granddaughter, Paisley Jane Lamp; brother, John Wilson; and sister, Anna Muzyzcek.

Surviving are his wife, Hester E. Dalton Wilson; children, Carol (Clarence) Whisman of Toronto, Ohio, Charles William “Skip” (Nancy) Wilson of Yorkville, Ill., Roger (Jane) Wilson of Rio, Wis., and Keith (Ilore) Wilson of Wintersville, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home on Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. On Monday, calling at Finley Church from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m., with the Rev. P. Douglas George officiating.

Burial in Union Cemetery, where services will be conducted by Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad.

Masonic services 7 p.m. Sunday.
