During the primary election set for Tuesday, one levy appears on the official ballot in Hancock County.

The Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation’s levy is proposed to provide financial support to the shelter foundation for the next three years.

According to a flyer provided by the Hancock County Animal Shelter, the shelter turns no animals in need away. This result is an overabundance of cats, kittens, dogs and puppies, especially in the warmer months, according to the flyer. Thousands of homeless animals enter the Hancock County Animal Shelter each year, the flyer states.

“This levy provides the citizens of Hancock County with a chance to come together to ensure that animals who find themselves in the shelter’s care are housed and cared for in the most humane way possible,” stated Ron Shaw, Hancock County Animal Shelter Foundation Board of Directors member.

Shaw continued, “Debby Zuba and Tabi Waskevich are currently working together to oversee the daily operations of the shelter. Washevich holds an associate degree in specialized technology (veterinary) from the Western School (of Health & Business Careers in Pittsburgh). Both ladies are lifelong friends of animals. The entire staff of the Hancock County Animal Shelter work every day to make a difference in the lives of the lost, sick, neglected, abandoned or abused animals that come into the care of our shelter on a daily basis.”

According to the information taken directly from the ballot, the special election is “to authorize additional levies for the fiscal years beginning July 1, 2009; July 1, 2010; and July 1, 2011, and for the purpose of providing the sum of $100,000.00 for each said fiscal year...”

The shelter has plans for improvements to the infrastructure and expansion of the facility, including separate health holding and isolation units for cats and dogs; improved housing for healthy cats and dogs; creation of an area for introducing animals to perspective adopters; pressurized chemical cleaning systems and commercial dishwashing system.
