Gospel fest good for downtown
POSTED: May 9, 2008
Gospel music will headline a concert at the Louis and Sandra Berkman Amphitheater at Historic Fort Steuben in downtown Steubenville Saturday in the Valley Gospel Fest.
The event, hoped to become an annual event, will be free and will run from noon to 7 p.m.
Organizers have attracted major performers, including Grammy winner Ashley Cleveland, as well as Jonathan White, Curtis Lewis and the Aliquippa Church in the Round Gospel Choir, the local Word of Life Singers, Seasons and the local Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Choir.
It’s a national-caliber event coming to the city, and it represents vision and effort on the part of organizers to take advantage of the fine venue that the amphitheater represents.
There will be involvement from local churches, with booths providing Christian materials and free blood pressure screenings by Trinity Health System. Churches also are invited to host booths to sell baked goods, crafts and cookbooks.
The event should be a boon for the community, attracting Gospel music fans into downtown to spend a day.
Hopefully, the weather will hold and the event will be held outdoors at the amphitheater. There is a rainy weather plan that would see the concert held at First Westminster Presbyterian Church.
The event is unique for the area and can become a hallmark of spring in Steubenville. All that’s needed is an audience, and that’s where you come in.
Plan on attending some portion of the concert and witness what a good day in downtown can be.
