Teens should be accountable forever

March 24, 2013

To the editor: I am shocked to the core that anyone in the community can in any way justify or defend the abhorrent behavior of the two young men who raped and paraded their victim for public......

Yes, they should. All those who viewed the rape and did nothing or coverup the rape are accountable too. The best thing that could happen is for the BOE to suspend the Big Red Football program for a few years and fire all the coverup coaches. Clean out the Steubenville vermin.

Just look at the high quality citizens produced by that program. Bronco Busick (convicted armed robber), Trent Mays (convicted rapist), Malik Richmond (Convicted rapist), Brandon Young (criminal, witnessed a murder and still played sports) and Tubbo Yetts (drug addict). I agree, it is time to shut this program down for a few years to keep this behavior from happening again. The OHSAA should suspend them for a few years. And before you sports fans start whining, I'd say the same about Edison, Toronto, Wellsville, or St. Clairsville if it happened there.

I don't think that there should be punishment for kids that didn't have anything to do with this crime. Those in the 8th or 9th or 10th grade should not have to be the ones punished. Even if you shut down the program, those coaches/teachers will still be there. The coaches/teachers and those in charge should bear the full force of the punishment.

Thomas, NOT ONE student-athlete at Penn St. was found to have any involvement in or knowledge of its recent scandal. However, 60 or more of PSU's players are serving a penalty that they do not deserve. The truth shows that at least two players carried out a crime and multiple others knew about it and did not inform the law, school officials, or their parents. Not to mention, the potential for coach/teacher/adminstrator knowledge of the events of August 11. A huge injustice would be to allow those who knew about the incident and covered it up to be able to participate in any capacity this football season. I understand that innocent individuals would be punished. But it's not like that has never happened before. Just ask Penn State.

Coaches are supposed to teach good behavior and good citizenship. They are supposed to build good character of their teammates. It appears that these coaches did not do their job. They must go!

I do not disagree with any of the comments submitted the young animals got exactly what they deserved to include the the registering as a sexual offender for the remainder of their dispeciable lives. As for the animals that watched all of this I fore one can only look upon them with disgust. My two boys were athelets this type of action would never have happened with them. They knew the horrible consquence from me and the law.

Guess I missed the trial where the coaches were found guilty of having knowledge of the rape and not informing someone. Lynch mobs seems to be the fashion today in the valley.

I'm wondering how it feels to live in a place where so many once had such pride but now live with national, even international, disgrace. Lots of people all over the country need to do a better job with their children, especially in the sex education department. Steubenville, I hope you take advantage of this pain, this embarrassment, this disgrace to raise the next generation in a more responsible manner.
