To the editor: So, the Edison Local school levy has been voted down once more....
« Back to Article
I agree Valleyman.
"Education" is no longer about education. It is about the survival of their bureauocracy. If educators truly wanted to educate their students, they'd be teaching, not just preparing students to take a standardized test.

RP my point is this, I believe last year the same guy was in the paper saying Education is underfunded. What they need more money to get the slug a softer pillow. I hope some Toronto teachers and Bus Drivers dont follow their supers lead and sleep during school that would cheat the kids. I found out he is retired and back, and this is what levies are for, pay to send this slug to a meeting, pay his lunch and mileage while he collects two paychecks and sleeps. You Toronto people are stupid fire this lazy bum.
GTFC Get over it! The levy has failed four times. I doubt it will ever pass. Come up with some other ideasto get yourmoney. The district did tr.y a school tax several years ago, but it failedbecause the district wasn't going yo elimate th property tax. That showed how. greedy those people are.

GTFC, I want you to answer the following:
What is the difference between "give me the money or else," and "give me your money or else?"
That is essentially, how the district went about this. They know that if they have to transport their kids to school, they will grow tired of it and just fork over the money next time. So, for now, they will punish the children and their parents until they comply.

Valleyman, you bring up an interesting point. Falling asleep at a meeting is not only disrespectful, it demonstrates the arrogance of these folks. They do what they want because they are never held accountable for their actions, yet we are supposed to trust them to educate our children. That alone speaks volumes.
Unitas talked about 7 supers in the County. That job cant be that hard Toronto's Superintendent slept thru a meeting in front of 60 other educators. he should be fired like the other fossils who cant stay awake but collect a paycheck.
GTFC. Yousaid that RPG whinned when thedistrict asked an then again made cuts. You called RPG a whinner. Your statement that you did not call anyone na,es is incorrect. ***** ****** pants on fire.
First and foremost, GTFC I suggest that you get your facts correct. My information is factual, taken from THEIR website. I highly doubt that any deviation from those numbers would be significant enough to distort the ratio to any meaningful extent. As for the name calling, I said that the tactics of the district mimic those of hostage takers, it was not directed at any individual. I am able and willing to engage in an intelligent conversation about this matter. You are walking away because you know the following: I am right, you are wrong, and you are losing. So, you are taking your ball and walking home.
By the way, the information on the Edison website is out of date. Those numbers are not accurate and are in the process of being updated. So my "facts" are correct. One last "fact". I am not a "buddy" of anyone on here nor am I terrorist, bank robber or hostage taker. Talk about calling people names. No one on here has called any of you names. We have just disagreed with you and tried to have an intelligent conversation about our views. I can see that any actual attempt of a constructive conversation will never happen and I honestly dont have time to discuss these issues with the handful of you on here.

By the way RPG, I dont hold children hostage nor do the supporters of Edison. The voters of the district are responsbile to provide the funding for the school, just like EVERY OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICT in the State of Ohio. Trust me, no one likes to ask the voters to raise their taxes, but that is the system that is currently in place in Ohio. When the voters say no to education, then cuts have to me made as you all were requesting before election day. Of course cuts were made for the past four years even though you keep saying they werent. Also, I do work in the business world and am quite aware how major corporations handle their budget and employees. The LAST thing they want to do is cut.

RPG-I just wanted to thank you for being an alumni and supporter of Edison. By the way, "pay to partcipate" sports was already put into place this year. As I have stated before, I dont mind having a professional and educated discussion about Edison, but please dont state "facts" unless they have been vetted and are correct.
Eliminate Jr. High sports should just be the beginning. How eliminating all sports or having "pay to play" sports? I know it sounds crappy but sports are not a necessary componet to education.
Budgets were being cut.The district didt know how much money would be forthcoming from the state foundation. The state legislature had not acted upon a school funding bill.................Some of the cuts being considered:eliminating jr high sports, activity busses,audi/visual directors, school nurses and 24.5 teaching positions. Some teachers would be splitting their days between two schools and two elementary principles would spend half a day teaching-excerpts from jeffaurean 1982
Furthermore, HOW DARE YOU AND PEOPLE LIKE YOU HOLD A CHILD HOSTAGE UNTIL YOUR BIDDING IS DONE! It was your unions that caused this problem, your strike that contributed and your whining that ultimately led to this problem. Now you are upset that the taxpayers have had enough and are using their rights to protect what is rightfully theirs. There are too many teachers in the district, eliminate half of them and you won't have budget problems. As for where we live, we are everywhere, Toronto, Edison, Steubenville, we the taxpayers are taking our freedom back one vote at a time.
GTFC again paint the MAJORITY of voters in the district as demons instead of doing something about the problem. WE are the MAJORITY and we say do something else other than fleece the property owners. Put your energy to use and get a petition to take to the County Commissioners and tell them you want the school's money from Wal Mart Distribution Center. Five to ten thousand voters will unseat any Commissioner. If worse comes to worse go door to door to raise money. Quit using the children as blackmail it doesn't work It just makes people more angry. A couple dozen of the new gas millionaires could bail you out also.
GTFC, you need to get your facts correct! The 15:1 student/teacher ratio comes from Edison's own website. You cannot hide the facts buddy. Simply take the number of students and divide that by the number of teachers and adminastrative staff (most are teachers). If you add in the "qualified staff" and the secretaries, you end up with 9 students for every one staff member. You say that the residents were warned what would happen if the voters wouldn't comply. Terrorists, bank robbers, and hostage takers utter those same words.

Wow. I am so glad NONE of you are involved with Edison. People were advised if the levy didnt pass what would happen. You whine when the district askss for support and then you whine when the district makes cuts. This district will never advance due to the mentality of 55% of its residents. I dont know where you think there is a 15:1 class ratio. By the way the Governor didnt provide any money to Edison because the forumula takes into consideration that Edison is a RICH district in land value and the district has the means to raise money by PASSING A LEVY! Why dont you all come out to a board meeting or face the voters who voted yes, better yet come tell the kids that you voted no. You wont because simply put, YOU DONT CARE!

I don't believe it could have been said any better than that.
The property tax is the main tax supporting local education, police/fire protection, local governments, some free medical services, and most of other local infrastructure. Also, many U.S. state and local jurisdictions impose personal property taxes. In Ohio, if you own a business, you pay taxes on your machinery, furniture, inventory, tools and supplies. Land Owners, business owners and Producers of jobs are being taxed to death! Educators should Learn about the tax system before you get up on your soapbox and demand more FREE STUFF! And quit making us feel guilty about "punishing" the children. We don't use them as pawns! YOU DO!

The point of the letter is that kids are being used as leverage to influence the vote of the taxpayer. The district believes if you are forced to transport your kids, buy another car, pay more in car insurance, worry about your kid more, that you'd vote for a tax increase rather than deal with the consequence. The taxpayers need to keep up the pressure next time they put this on the ballot and vote "NO!" Believe me, there will be a next time. Pretty soon, they will be forced to maek the right financial decisions which is a layoff.
Good point, RPG0340. As a parent who will have to transport my child next year, how will those "in charge" in the high school know where each student is going? How will they know I'm my child's mother and now some random person? And let's not even broach the subject of parking. I see cars stretched along the sides of 152.
survivoroftheflood, Both the Ohio & U.S. Supreme Courts say all bussing for all students as equality and the parents of the private school students pay taxes for school operations as well.
Due in part to the selfish teachers Unions, they hold the children hostage for higher pay and cadillac benefits while the kids are dumb down by poor teaching performance. In private schools, teachers are held accountable where public schools reward teachers through tenure and NOT quality results.
Indian Creek did the same thing with the buses in the 80's. The district gets paid to bus the other students to the private schools...that is the difference. It is nothing new, they will survive, life will go on.
If schools were run like a private business, things like this would be staved off a long time ago.
Furthermore, I wonder if the district will be sued if a student dies in an automobile accident on the way to school because they were riding with a student instead of on a bus not by choice but out of necessity.
Also, since bus transportation is not provided can students be penalized for not going to school in hazardous road conditions?
Edison opened a whole can o worms here. The only viable solution is a teacher layoff but they are trying to make it work without that only real solution.
