I Remember When

I remember when ... the railroads were the area’s life blood

A train rumbles into the Pennsylvania Railroad station in downtown Steubenville in the early 20th century as a woman waits on the walkway next to the station in this photo from Jim Rinaldo of Toronto.
October 4, 2009

TORONTO — For Jim Rinaldo, railroads are a fascination, a way to learn and preserve history, and a part of the area’s life blood. Rinaldo’s impressive railroad photos from around the valley in the steam train era include shots from throughout downtown Steubenville, and other areas. Not only are there great photos of trains steaming into the station in downtown Steubenville, but the early 1900s views of downtown and the city’s people fill the views. Rinaldo said he grew up about a block from the train station, which was at Sixth and Market streets, in the area where the Herald-Star building now sits. “There was a building there, like a freight unloading platform, and an office that faced North Street. Across the street was a big freighthouse that burned down around July of 1965,” Rinaldo recalls. “South of that was the train station on Sixth Street. The whole area was railroad property.
