Lowering national speed limit a bad idea
The government doesn’t need to study a new national speed limit and Sen. John Warner, R-Va., should be thanked for his service as he concludes his final term in office. Warner proposed studying what would be the optimal speed limit for efficiency as a possible means to combatting higher fuel prices. He said the 55 mph limit enacted in 1974 is estimated to have saved as much as 167,000 barrels of oil a day, according to government figures. A national speed limit lower than 65 mph would do little except cause enforcement agencies to expend more of their budget on speeding enforcement. People don’t follow the 65 mph limit now, choosing to drive just as fast as they think they safely can go. Anyone who has driven on state Route 7, U.S. Route 22, state Route 2 or Interstate 70 lately will attest to that.
