Rules are rules, yet....

October 28, 2011 - Mike Mathison
The Holland (N.Y.) High girls soccer team finished the season 15-2 and has been ruled ineligible for the playoffs.

Why?

The team played one game too many during the regular season.

A state regulation that is two years old says teams may only play 16 regular season games, or less. If a team goes beyond that number, the rules state that team is ineligible for the playoffs.

What we have here, folks, is a failure to communicate.

If the rule says no more than 16 and you play 17, it seems to me the rule is very clear.

Yet, people want to make excuses why the Dutchwomen should be allowed to participate in the playoffs.

Nope.

Someone can't count to 16 in that athletic department?

Obviously not.

Innocent mistake or not, the rule is there for a reason.

We can argue over the reason, an apparent cost-cutting measure. Although I am not sure really how much cost-cutting was done because of the decision to go to 16 games, a decision was made and I would guess every athletic director knew the rule.

"Unfortunately a mistake was made and the consequences are severe," said Section VI Girls Soccer Chairman Chris Durr told the Buffalo News. "I know it was an honest mistake, not something they tried to do. They had a great team, great players, they went to regionals last year and had a great team coming back."

You can't say.....rules are rules, but....

But, nothing. The rules are rules and they must be followed. If the rest of the teams stopped at 16 games, so could have the Holland High School girls soccer team.
