Now that Tressel is gone...
May 30, 2011 - Mike Mathison
...it's time for Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith and President Gordon Gee to be next.
They stood by Jim Tressel in March and April, but, somehow, distanced themselves from the embattled coach during the month of May.
Now that Tressel was forced to resign in Columbus Monday morning as the Buckeyes' football coach, which should have been done two months ago, Smith must also be relieved of his duty. Gee and Smith stood by their man until the fire got too hot. They stood by their man until they realized they also didn't want to go down with the sinking Ohio State ship.
They drew a line in the sand in March and put themselves squarely on the side of the line where Tressel stood. Monday morning they cut bait and moved the line, or jumped to the other side.
Tressel fell on the sword, as he should. All the man had to do was forward the original e-mail that started Tatoo-gate to the compliance department and his hands were washed of the situation. But, that didn't happen.
He lied. He covered it up and Gee and Smith allowed him to keep his job after that. Because of that, they need to exit Columbus.
School is over and summer is here.
They can find other jobs.
