I'm with COCO!
January 19, 2010 - Brandi Bowers
Remember when NBC had great programming... Friends & Seinfeld in primetime, Leno at 11:35 & Conan at 12:35... yeah, not anymore! Seriously, what is going on over there? Even if you don't watch that much TV, I'm sure you've heard about the late night battle between Jay Leno & Conan O'Brien.
I think Jay is a great guy and he's good at what he does, but his time in the spotlight has passed. This year should have been all about Conan, but no, instead, NBC decided to promote Jay's new show. Jay thought it was a good idea to keep the jobs of his staff, well, that's great, but what about the jobs that the network could have created with new shows, that actors & crews depend on but never came. And, all that promotion for his show should have been for Conan being the new host of The Tonight Show. I'm beginning to think that show is cursed. This is somewhat reminiscent of the battle between Jay & David Letterman after Johnny Carson retired.
Here's the deal, NBC is saying that Conan's ratings aren't high enough. Really? You're going to use the ratings argument now? When you told Jay six years ago that Conan would be taking over for him he had the highest ratings in that time spot and it didn't matter. I just think you need to stand by your decisions. If you wanted Conan to take over the reigns, then you should have backed him.
On a positive note, I think both Conan & Jay are handling the situation pretty well with each other. I wouldn't expect anything less from Conan. I've been watching his show for years and although some of the older folks may not understand his humor or some of his skits, he's definitely a classy guy. I'm not the only one who thinks so either, there were rallies everywhere yesterday for Conan!
The latest update from TMZ says that Conan will receive money from NBC as part of letting him go from his contract with the show. Sources are saying a few stipulations may be that he can't host another show until September (there's talk of FOX, which I think would be a good move at this point), & also there's the chance that he will not be able to take some of his most memorable & hilarious skits (Triumph the insult comic dog, the masterbating bear, pimpbot, etc.). I think that's just wrong, but knowing Conan, I'm sure he'll find a way. Hopefully everything works out for the best & we get to continue seeing Conan!
