Fall 2009 TV Cancellations

November 12, 2009 - Brandi Bowers
Well, it's that time of year. We are well into the Fall television season and we've had quite a mixture of new shows airing. Of course, they don't all make it to next year... or even the end of this season.

So far the following shows have been canceled & here are some of my thoughts on this:

Trauma (NBC: one season) Did we really need another ER knock off right after that show ended? The answer is no. ER ended because it had it's run, not because it was a bad show. So, what made NBC think it was a good idea to put the same exact show in the same exact time slot, but without the amazing cast or fresh story lines?

Dollhouse (FOX: two seasons) I'm actually disappointed this one was canceled. This show was created by Joss Whedon, who was the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, one of my favorite shows of all time. I have to admit, though, like many people, I rarely watched it. Why? Because it aired on Friday nights. Sorry, but at the end of the work week, I'm either out with friends, or home sleeping or watching a movie, not watching regular television. And from the looks of the blogs, I was not alone. A lot of people seem to be watching shows like this online. Well, apparently only live viewership counts with television ratings, so that's why this show got the ax. I think it would have done a lot better on another night.

Hank (ABC: one season) Ok, so I've blogged about ABC's Wednesday night comedy night. I'm a big fan. I also was a big fan of Frasier back in the day. But, I can honestly say I never even watched a single episode of this show. There was just no appeal and it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the shows.

The Beautiful Life (CW: one season ) Quickly thrown together CW teen show about models. Enough said. Well, maybe I could say a little more. Sorry Ashton, but I think you should stick to being the hot, goofy guy in movies, instead of producing mindless teen tv shows. And, don't think I'm knocking teen shows because I'm not a teen. Remember the Degrassi blog? Yes, I watch Teen Nick.

Eastwick (ABC: one season) I also liked this show, but I did have a feeling it wouldn't last. I think ABC had the right elements for this show, but something just wasn't clicking. I think it was the right time for a show about women with powers, the right actors were chosen for their parts, but somehow the story lines were sketchy. I don't think the story flowed really well, and I'm not sure the mood really fit the rest of the night's television. The good news is, we'll get to see the rest of this season. The bad news is, they don't have much of a chance to wrap up the series and give us "closure" in that time.

Southland
(NBC: one season) Here is a series with decent actors and stories, but due to NBC's airing Jay Leno at 10:00pm every night (not sure how long that will last now that everyone's catching on to how much tv time that show is taking up), this show got the ax. Luckily for fans, TNT has picked it up. Actually, I think it fits in better with TNT's whole drama theme. I just hope it does well, being that it's cable and not network television. Of course, if you're like me, you're probably finding out, there are even better shows on cable these days.

Let me know your thoughts or if you've heard of any other cancellations I haven't heard of yet!
