Saturn by Chrysler?

May 5, 2009 - Paul Giannamore

Here's a wild thought.

What if Fiat is successful in buying GM Europe and brings it and Chrysler under the same banner?

Can Saturn, the little car company that was different at one time back when GM founded it in the 1980s, suddenly have a road to survival?

If you're not aware, most of Saturn's best cars now are Opels, as in, designs by GM Europe. The Astra and the Aura are both Opels. The Sky roadster is sold in Europe as an Opel.

So, wild thought. Fiat buys GM Europe and makes a deal to take on Saturn. Now, suddenly, Chrysler doesn't have to wait until 2011 to get fresh, popular economical product in its showrooms. It could have Saturn under the same umbrella, ready to weather the storms until the Fiat 500 gets produced in North America in a Chrysler-Fiat plant.

Saturn's products are well made. They are desirable, at long last, to those who want more than to just be seen as marching to a different drum.

Chrysler could kill off the Gawdawful Sebring/Avenger and sell the Aura, a better looking, better car. The Sky would be competing against nothing else like it in the American market because GM is killing the associated Pontiac Solstice. While they're at it, kill off the horrible little Caliber and replace it with the Astra. Suddenly, Chrysler doesn't have to wait until 2013 just to reskin its current crop of vehicles.

Work out the dealership patterns, and this could be a winner.

 Hmmm??
