Draft Day Dilemma
Wed, August 27, 2008 @ 5:19PM
So, it's draft day. Check the time...15 minutes early. Log in. What do you see...you were lucky enough to pull the number one spot! Then you start thinking. There are 11 other teams in this league...Crikey! Thats a ton of waiting between picks. First pick in the draft, no brainer...LaDainian Tomlinson right? Or, do you take All Day Adrian Peterson...maybe a Michael Westbrook? This was the "dilemma" I was faced with when I held my yearly Yahoo! draft. I chose LT, and rather quickly. Why LT and not Peterson. Easy, he is simply the best fantasy player out there. Year after year he puts up the best numbers consitantly. 1500 yds, 15 TDs, and averages close to 400 yds per season receiving. Thats money if you ask me. Brian Westbrook i

The Walking Leaf
Thu, August 21, 2008 @ 8:47AM
So, if my motto of "You learn something new every day or else you might as well be dead" is true, then I can say I get to live another day. Thanks to a little help from my friends in the newsroom and some looking around by Photographer Christina Kelley, I now know what that bug was I saw the other night. I had what I believe to be my first encounter with a walking leaf. Apparently I'm the only 40-something in the Ohio Valley who never saw one. I've seen walking sticks. I used to love the praying mantises that showed up on my pole bean plants back when I planted those every year. My beans were great because the mantises (mantii?) apparently ate anything that would have bothered my beans. And they're cool to watch, too. But I'd never seen a walking leaf until I went to unlock the door to the driver 's ed classroom the other night. There was this little bright-green leaf walking up my shoe. Huh? What the heck is that? The walkin

Let's Go 'EERS
Mon, August 25, 2008 @ 3:33PM
Saturday will mark the beginning of the POST RICH ROD ERA. WVU will take the field under the leadership and game plan of the new head coach Bill Stewart. Stewart took over for the Mountaineers bowl game last season when coach Rich Rodriguez turned his back on his team to take a job at Michigan University. The coach that talked about being a family on the field and brothers in the huddle just walked out on his team before a bowl game... Rich didn't wait for the season to end to make a decision that would effect a whole university and young men that looked up to him, NO NO NO he turned his back to his players(family) and told them that money was more important than values. He told his players, "Don't be in a rush to go pro, get your education, stay in college, yada yada yada" He talked the talk but didn't walk the walk. He took the money and ran, and when I say ran I mean he flew to Michigan and was old their football field drinking coffee before as his football team family fou

Wrestling with reality
Tue, August 5, 2008 @ 11:16AM
I can't believe it's been a year today since the phone call came bearing news I still wrestle with: an uncle had committed suicide. Death is a life reality tough enough to deal with whether it's "expected" so to speak when someone has suffered with a lengthy illness or when death comes like a thief in the night, when a life is snuffed out abruptly, for example, because of an automobile accident or some freak of nature. But when death is someone's choice, it leaves more questions than answers. I know there are readers out there who have or are dealing with the aftermath of a loved one who has taken his or her own life so maybe we've shared similar thoughts: How could they do that? What were they thinking? Could I have said or done something to produce a different outcome? I don't have any answers. Just questions. And I think more compassion for those who have been down this road before me. I don't stand in judgment of my uncle's choice, but I feel great sadness in processing the in

sicnr...
Mon, August 4, 2008 @ 9:53AM
The other day Summer Wallace - our PA Focus wonder girl - was in the newsroom and said "OMG, WTF." I sat there with that same look on my face as when my great-grandmother talked to me in Ukrainian. Summer was texting talking. I can't understand the texting language and I don't think it is allowable to text talk. Last week the American College of Emergency Physicians came out with a warning about texting and walking and texting and driving. It appears texting is taxing on the brain and people are walking off curbs and into poles and trees. I'm sorry, but I would LMBO if I saw someone walk into a tree. SICNR. It is even more dangerous to text and drive. DQMOT but you have to have your HUB to try to type a message on a tiny keypad and drive at the same time. AYSOS? At least texting is private and quiet because FICCL about another person's conversation while I'm walking down the aisle a

Week One High School Football
Sun, August 24, 2008 @ 9:49PM
Big Red could have one of the fastest defenses in the state. They are quick to the ball and held Indian Creek junior standout running back Doren Thomas, a 10.9 sprinter, in check. Trey Wiggins looks like he can make plays, Branko Busick is a man-child and Dwight Macon will make plays. But, they are only three members of a tradition-rich football program who prepares for Akron Buchtel to invade Harding Stadium. Kudos to Indian Creek who has stepped in the past two years, and will do so for two more years, to open with Steubenville at Harding Stadium. You know, there isn't a long line of suitors for that spot The Redskins played better this year than last season and I believe they are in a better place and a better frame of mind than 12 months ago. They now go on the road to face an Oak Glen squad with question marks because of a new coaching staff and, rumor has it, a new attitude. Harrison Central had a huge road win against Claymont, even though the

It's Tough Work, Being the Tooth Fairy
Wed, August 27, 2008 @ 2:10PM
My daughter lost a baby tooth Saturday. She walked into the room and put this tooth in my hand. It was dripping blood. I was less than enthusiastic. "Mommy, I lost my tooth," she exclaimed. "Um. I see." I was eying this tooth and wondering what I was going to do with it. I'd thought weád gone through the baby tooth-losing phase. Of course, she had to stick it in a plastic bag and shove it under her pillow. I hustled downstairs to confront my husband. "Have you got any change?" Now, when I was little, you were lucky to get a quarter from the tooth fairy for a lost tooth. Now, apparently, the going rate is a dollar. It's only been 20 years - has the price of a tooth inflated by 300 percent in that time? So we had a dollar. All we had to do was out wait her. Unfortunately, this child never sleeps; ever. I went in at 10 p.m. Still awake. 11 p.m. - still aw
